Rockets launch in second half to topple Bulldogs

3 min read

CLAYSBURG -- It wasn't until the second half that Southern Huntingdon built its big lead at Claysburg-Kimmel Friday. A pair of interception returns for touchdowns sent the Rockets to a 56-14 win over the Bulldogs.

This one may be more remembered for the sheer amount of penalty flags hurled by the officials. A combined total of 28 penalties were called for a massive 251 yards.

Southern Huntingdon used the passing game in the first half to do its damage. In the second half the Rockets went to the ground game.

The Rockets collected four turnovers from the Bulldogs. The first pick-six of the night, from Aiden Berrier, came after Claysburg had cut the score to 28-14 and took the wind out of their sails.

Play of the game: Rocket senior Gage Reed intercepted a fourth-quarter pass and ran it back 50 yards to the end zone.

Player of the game: Southern Huntingdon senior quarterback Cohen Snyder threw four touchdown passes, finishing eight of 11 for 154 yards.

Unsung heroes: Southern's defensive line of Dalton Mitchell, Kendrick Wykoff, Lane Johnson, and Jacob Worthy never gave Claysburg any chance to run the football.

Most vital statistics: The Bulldogs came up with four yards rushing the football, but were 14 of 27 for 118 yards, two scores, and three interceptions passing.

Southern Huntingdon coach Fred Foster: "We have to be careful on the late hits. We have to learn from it and go to the next play. Drew Flood runs hard every week. I'm proud of the O-line for stepping up. We made some late defensive adjustments."

Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick: "We have a young and under-sized team. Our line is battling and working hard. We're not quitting. We haven't learned how to sustain the momentum."

Records: Southern Huntingdon 4-2. Claysburg 0-6.

Next week: Southern Huntingdon home vs. West Branch. Claysburg at Glendale.
