HOLLIDAYSBURG -- Following a road loss to Maryland state power Fort Hill last week, Hollidaysburg bounced back impressively in its homecoming game Friday night.
Led by junior back Isaac Vent's 158 rushing yards on 16 carries and breakaway scoring runs of 53 and 46 yards in the first quarter, Hollidaysburg jumped out to a 38-0 halftime lead and kicked the mercy rule clock into effect for the entire second half en route to a 52-12 rout of Butler at Tiger Stadium.
After an interception by junior lineman Will Padamonsky paved the way for a 4-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Vince Albarano just 54 seconds into the game, Vent broke free for his 53-yard scoring run with 1:34 left.
Following a Tyler McGough interception, Vent burst into the open field again just over a minute later and raced to the end zone from 46 yards away to give Hollidaysburg (4-2) a commanding 21-0 lead at the first-quarter pole.
An injury sustained by the Golden Tigers' star running back Carter Muth early in the season opened the door for Vent to become Hollidaysburg's feature back, and he has capitalized on that opportunity.
"We know that Isaac is a special back, and he has had the opportunity to showcase that," Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre said of Vent. "He had a great summer (preparing). He has the ability to get out on the edge, and make some nice cuts to get into the open field with his explosiveness.''
Hollidaysburg's offensive line played a great game opening up running lanes and protecting Albarano, who completed six of 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for two more scores, including a 60-yard TD jaunt in the second quarter.
"My line helped me out a lot tonight,'' Vent said. "We had good communication among all the players on our offensive unit.''
Hollidaysburg senior tackle Lincoln Wertz said that the Golden Tigers practiced with intensity this past week after last Friday's loss.
"We used a 3 front formation on the offensive line, and everybody up front did their jobs and we succeeded,'' Wertz said.
Hollidaysburg rolled up 341 of its 489 total yards in the first half, and DeLattre was able to get every player on his roster playing time in the second half.
"That's good when we can do that, because all the players on this team work very hard,'' DeLattre said.
Butler, which dropped its third straight game and fell to 3-3, was overmatched in the trenches, but the Golden Tornado's head coach, Eric Christy, was pleased with the effort that his team put forth.
"We know that Hollidaysburg is a good football team,'' Christy said. "Homer does a great job with them. They've got some good size, and we're at a size disadvantage against almost every team that we play. But I was proud of the effort that our players showed tonight.''
