COMMODORE -- Portage improved its record to 4-5 with a 33-20 victory over Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference game on Friday night.

Tyson Burkett ran in two scores for the Mustangs and also threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Conner Sciko that put Portage up 33-14 in the third quarter.

Purchase Line's Maddox Frantz opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run, but Llehson Walker and Burkett each had rushing scores to give Portage a 14-7 advantage after one quarter.

"I'm really proud of how our kids responded after a tough loss last week,'' Portage coach Marty Slanoc said. "Purchase Line is a physical team who is well-coached. I thought we really responded well on both sides of the ball after they went up a score on the opening drive.''

The teams traded scores in the second quarter with Landon Simala scoring on an 11-yard run for Portage, and Micah Lotson scoring from 16 yards out for Purchase Line.

Burkett then added another rushing touchdown and his throwing score to Sciko in the third quarter before Purchase Line's Matthew Johnston closed out the scoring with a 25-yard TD run.

"We aren't perfect, but we made plays when we needed to, and I'm proud of our kids,'' Slanoc said.
