SAXTON -- Northern Bedford came into Week 6 of the football season Friday as a team that was itching to get things in gear.
The Panthers achieved that and then some by scoring five times in the first half to pick up their third win by dismantling Tussey Mountain, 39-0.
Northern struck first with an eight-play, 86-yard drive. The march was capped by a 24-yard scoring play from Trace Baker to Nevin Lloyd and the Panthers never looked back.
Tussey lost two fumbles in its early possessions with Panthers Caden Troy and Kollin Brennan both falling on loose balls. NB traveled 50 yards soon after receiving the second gift from Tussey. Jordan Free hauled in a pass from Baker to add to the lead.
The first play of the second quarter was also successful when Erik Swanseen crashed in from 4 yards away. The balanced Panther running game was led by Swanseen, who ended with 87 yards. The team totaled 278 yards on the ground.
Plays of the game: Lloyd, a wide receiver, broke free from Tussey defenders twice for big scoring plays. The first one went for 24 yards in the Panther's first drive and the second came just before halftime and covered 42 yards. Both strikes were thrown by Baker, who hit Lloyd streaking across the middle.
Players of the game: The Northern Bedford defense, led by Caden Troy, Kollin Brennan and friends made things miserable for Tussey Mountain all night. The team only allowed three first downs and forced five turnovers.
Most vital statistic: Northern Bedford ran a whopping 29 plays in the game's first quarter, scoring twice. Tussey only ran nine plays and lost two fumbles during the same time frame.
Northern Bedford coach Garry Black: "This is exactly what we were looking for from our football team. We knew we needed to come out and play good football. Tussey is a rival and it does not matter what the record is. I couldn't be happier with our defensive performance. The line especially executed well,"
Tussey Mountain coach Jacob Dasher: Another week and it was pretty much the same story. We turned the ball over too much and we are giving teams short fields. We just do not do fundamental well enough to keep ourselves in games.
Notable: Northern's Brett Cottle and Weston Baker both picked off Tussey passes … Black made certain to credit Tussey for doing all it can to battle through the injury bug that has plagued the Titan team, especially noting the loss of TM quarterback Owen Miller in the very first quarter of the season in late August..... Northern used several young players throughout the game and had four different kickers attempt PATs.
Records: Northern Bedford (3-3); Tussey Mountain (0-6).
Next week: Northern Bedford hosts Meyersdale, and Tussey Mountain hosts Berlin Brothersvalley.
