Motivated Vikings win big

FLINTON -- Claysburg-Kimmel had won four straight games against Glendale, including the last two District 6 Class 1A playoff appearances for the Vikings.
So there was plenty of motivation for Glendale going into Friday night's game against the winless Bulldogs at Dr. Roy F. Baker Field.
The Vikings used that motivation, experience to overwhelm the Bulldogs early, scoring on their first six possessions of the first half, including three Tanner Ammerman touchdown runs, while shutting out C-K in the first 24 minutes and rolling to a 60-7 mercy rule win.
"Everything I called, they executed perfectly," Glendale coach Chase Hill said. "It makes my job very easy when they go out and put on that type of performance. They make me look a better play caller than I really am at the end of the day.
"We've got a team full of dogs, a team full of athletes, and they wanted this one. Claysburg knocked them out of the playoffs two years ago and knocked us out last year. So, they were kind of taking this one personally. They definitely answered.
"We talked about that all week. Any time a team beats you four times in two years it never feels good. So any time you have a chance to get a win against them, especially with them being quad-A and getting those (District 6 playoff) points, you've got to take advantage of it."
Play of the game: Take your pick, but quarterback Michael Venslosky, who completed six of his eight passes for 135 yards and two TD passes to Rhylan Hoopsick-Bell, threw a 56-yard TD pass to Hoopsick-Bell in the first quarter.
The 6-foot-7 receiver caught the pass on a crossing pattern and outraced the Bulldog defense to the end zone.
"I was joking with Rylan I didn't know he was that fast," Hill said with a laugh. "I think that that's the most yards after a catch he's ever had in his life. Mike made a good read, threw it and Rhylan took care of the rest."
Player of the game: Ammerman ran for 152 yards on 11 carries and scored on runs of 10, 16 and 15 yards in the first 13:05 of the game. Ammerman, who also had runs of 35, 32 and 9, didn't play in the second half after Glendale led 46-0 at halftime.
"Every time he touches the ball when you're the opposing defense you have to hold your breath," Hill said. "He's so shifty. He's such an explosive athlete. He was running hard and the line was making good holes for him. I'm glad he's on our team and we don't have to coach against him."
Unsung heroes: The Glendale defense limited the Bulldogs to 38 total yards, 34 of which came on a Blake Kulick touchdown pass to Gavin Treon in the fourth quarter. The Vikings picked off two passes and recovered a fumble.
C-K coach Chuck Kassick on his team's performance: "We have a young team. I can't fault our effort. We're thin. We're not very big. Glendale's line is giant. They have a very veteran team, and it showed tonight."
Time for the subs: Up 46-0 at halftime, Glendale's backups played in the second half as Ammerman, Venslosky, Hoopsick-Bell and Hamilton were among the starters who watched from the sideline.
"Our guys did their job, and we've got to get guys reps for next year," Hill said. "We gain nothing by keeping our guys out there. We only get better by putting our other guys in and getting them reps in the second half. In the second half, our subs looked great. Our guys were cheering them on from the sideline."
Notable: The Vikings piled up 474 total yards on only 35 plays. .... Levi Hamilton ran for a 62-yard touchdown and ran successfully for the 2-point conversion three times and passed for another.
Next week: C-K hosts Curwensville. Glendale visits Southern Huntingdon.
Records: C-K (0-7). Glendale (3-4).
