Cambria Heights Highlanders complete perfect regular season

By Rick Weaver 4 min read

PATTON -- Cambria Heights completed a perfect Heritage Conference football season with a 49-6 victory against West Shamokin in the season finale for both schools at AmeriServe Stadium on Friday night.

Unofficially, Cambria Heights will host Central Cambria in the first round of the District 6 Class 3A playoffs, which begin next weekend.

"(Whether we are No.) 1 or 2, we play here. And that is what we want. So we want to play at home; that is obviously a better thing. We want a home game; that is all we are focused on," Highlanders coach Jarrod Lewis said.

Play of the game: Nolan Clawson ran 56 yards on third and 19 for the Highlanders' fourth touchdown of the night.

"You can only scheme so much for a guy when he's a good athlete," West Shamokin coach Kirk Rearick said. "They know their players' strengths, how to move them. It's a credit to coach Lewis and the whole staff."

Player of the game: Clawson ran for 185 yards and completed 8 out of 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Unsung heroes: Cambria Heights fielded 11 seniors on its varsity team. They were Clawson, Brayden DeArmitt, Carl Finet, Ethan Fox, Camden Gray, Nito Kutruff, Bryce Lewis, Ty McConnell, Jack Sherwood, Colton Strong and Nathan Wood.

"I was happy with the way we took care of business. And on a night like this (give credit to) our seniors. I thought our seniors did a great job of pacing us and being great leaders all season," Lewis said.

Most vital statistics: Cambria Heights outgained West Shamokin, 475-207 in total yards, but committed two turnovers and was penalized eight times for 75 yards. The Highlanders allowed two or more touchdowns in three games this season. Cambria Heights allowed only five touchdowns at home.

Coach Lewis praised the complementary football the Highlanders have played throughout the season. "Special teams, too. We've been good on offense, defense and special teams. That's the way you want to keep doing it. I'm really with the way our guys have played," he said.

Coach Lewis: "We took care of our business. Whoever we play, it's going to be a good team. They're only taking four teams in Triple-A. So whoever we play, we know it's going to be a good team, and it's going to be a battle."

Coach Rearick: "They're the best team in the conference for a reason. They don't make a lot of mistakes. They capitalize on your mistakes, they have a great scheme for the players that they have."

Clawson: "It's great to know we have people to trust and give them the ball."

Notable: DeArmitt caught five passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns (14 and 15 yards). ... Strong rushed eight times for 85 yards and two scores (15 and 5 yards). ... Davin Warner ran for the Highlanders' seventh score, a 12-yard run. ... West Shamokin junior Andrew Krizmanich missed the Wolves' first field-goal attempt of the season, from 25 yards, early in the second quarter. ... Cambria Heights did not punt. ... Jordan Shaffer intercepted Clawson midway through the second quarter. ... Chuck King caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cole Wingard on the game's last play. He also recovered a fumble at the Cambria Heights 39 in the first half. ...
