Bishop McDevitt’s passing attack too much for Lions

By Jarrod Prugar 4 min read

HARRISBURG -- Four first-quarter touchdowns helped lead the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders to a 47-14 win over the Altoona Mountain Lions at Rocco Ortenzio Stadium Friday night.

Crusaders quarterback Sebastian Williams threw two touchdowns apiece to Jontai Quick and Zayden Smith to help Bishop McDevitt to a 28-0 lead after a quarter of play.

Altoona quarterback Mekhi Jackson's 77-yard run early in the second quarter set up an 8-yard touchdown pass to Cody Chathams to make it a 21-point game after Chathams made the extra point.

From then on, it was all Bishop McDevitt as Williams hooked up with Howard Holton Jr. to move the lead back to 28 points with their 32-yard connection. Running back Kaedyn Walker scored the first rushing touchdown of the game with a 7-yard run to make it 41-7 after the missed extra point heading into the half.

Williams found Holton again in the third quarter with a 7-yard touchdown pass to round out the scoring for the Crusaders at 47.

Brayden Pike set the Mountain Lions up for their lone second-half touchdown with a 53-yard run before running back Robert Kincherlow scored from 8 yards out. Ryan Aiken's extra point made it 47-14.

Play of the game: Williams found Quick for a 22-yard touchdown that featured Quick jumping and hauling in the pass one-handed in the corner of the end zone. It was the first score of the game.

Player of the game: Williams was 13-for-17 for 339 yards and six touchdowns.

Unsung heroes: Altoona quarterbacks Jackson and Pike both had long runs to set up each of the two touchdowns for the Mountain Lions. Jackson went for 77 yards while Pike had a 53-yard run.

Most vital statistic: Bishop McDevitt had two scoring drives in the first quarter that were only one play.

Altoona coach Vince Nedimyer Jr.: "(McDevitt) saw that we were in some man coverage, and our kids were on islands, and they made plays. Credit to them. Obviously, there are a lot of things that we know we can practice and get better at this week, and I know our kids will come back and do just that."

Bishop McDevitt coach Jeff Weachter: "We tried to come out and run the ball, and they were just blitzing us all out, blitzing us and playing cover zero. We just let our receivers go 1-on-1, and Sebastian Williams did a great job, threw the ball in time, put it where it needed to be, made the right reads."

Notable: Bishop McDevitt's first punt came with 1:56 left in the third quarter … Altoona hasn't beaten Bishop McDevitt since 2006 … Altoona is only the third team to score against the Crusaders this year

Records: Bishop McDevitt (6-1), Altoona (4-3).

Next week: Altoona hosts State College on Friday. Bishop McDevitt plays at Carlisle.
