CLAYSBURG -- When you have had as much turnover as Claysburg-Kimmel did on the football field, some growing pains will be seen along the way.
"When you lose 19 out of 22 starters from a senior class that was pretty successful, you got to start all over again," Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick said. "We're just learning how to play at this point. We're playing a lot of young kids that didn't have that experience coming into the season, and now on Friday night, it's a lot different than it is on a Thursday evening or a Monday night."
Those growing pains were on display Friday night as the Bulldogs were clobbered 41-7 by Windber at Bulldog Stadium in Inter-County Conference action.
Play of the game: On a pivotal third down and 18, Windber quarterback Tyler Tallyen launched a 20-yard pass to running back Trey Tallion for a Rambler first down. Running back Isaac Serenko capped off the drive on the next play from 48 yards out to put Windber up 14-0 late in the first quarter.
Player of the game: Serenko racked up 128 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns on the ground.
Unsung heroes: The Rambler defense forced three turnovers, which resulted in 21 points, held the Bulldogs to 128 yards of total offense and 11 first downs.
Most vital statistics: Windber's defense allowed 47 total yards on the ground on 22 attempts with 81 of them coming through the air on 11 completed passing attempts. The Rambler also overcame committing nine penalties for 73 yards.
Windber first-year coach Frank Tallyen: "I have a lot of faith in our offense. Our defense is still growing. We're not where we need to be yet. Coach (Don) Fyfe is a great signal caller, and it was a no brainer.''
Kassick: "They come off the ball hard; they come up and hit you. Fundamentally, they were sound. Their running backs and their receivers, they catch the ball and run hard, they block hard, stay on blocks.''
Notable: This marked the first time the two schools have played each other since Windber moved to the Inter-County Conference from the WestPAC. ... It was the Claysburg program's annual youth night recognizing its future football players and cheerleaders. ... The Ramblers didn't punt the ball one time and registered 13 first downs in the first half to the Bulldogs' six. ... Claysburg-Kimmel's lone score came late in the fourth quarter came off a takeaway. Claysburg was called for four infractions for 30 yards.
Records: Windber (1-1), Claysburg-Kimmel (0-2)
Next week: Windber will host Tussey Mountain while Claysburg-Kimmel travels to West Branch next Friday.
