WINDBER -- Tyrone senior Mason Emigh did a little bit of everything to help his team win their second straight contest to start the season on Friday night.
Emigh and the Golden Eagles put on a display of splash plays on both sides of the ball, combined with a defensive effort that kept Westmont Hilltop in check for most of the night in a 34-7 Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference victory that was played at Windber Stadium due to a power outage in Westmont.
Play of the game: Midway through the second quarter, Emigh jumped a route and took it to the house on a 20-yard pick-six that put Tyrone up 20-0 and gave the Golden Eagles momentum the rest of the way.
Player of the game: In addition to his takeaway, Emigh had a 42-yard touchdown run late in the first half, and followed that up with a 10-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter to complete the scoring for the Golden Eagles.
Unsung hero(es): Tyrone's defensive front created havoc in the Hilltopper backfield all night. John Eaken, Landon Finocchio, Kyler Suhoney and Zach Silva all came up with sacks and tackles for loss to thwart Westmont Hilltop drives.
Most vital statistic: Tyrone's defense held Westmont Hilltop's offense to just 142 total yards, with 55 of them coming on one fourth-quarter play.
Tyrone coach Jason Jones: "Our defense has played great for the first two weeks. It's really been our strength along with special teams."
Westmont Hilltop coach Josh Rearick: "We had some opportunities that just didn't connect, and then things got off track and it was tough to get our footing."
Emigh: "We were in Cover-2, and I pushed my guy in. I saw he was throwing it down, so I ran up and picked it off."
Notable: Tyrone's Caleb Whitby ran for a game-high 98 yards on 16 carries, all in the first half. Ben Walk threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Golden Eagles.
Records: Tyrone (2-0), Westmont Hilltop (0-2)
Next week: Tyrone hosts Central. Westmont Hilltop hosts Richland on Thursday.
