FLINTON -- Line Mountain, which went 11-1 and won a District 4 Class 1A title last season, made the 2-hour, 30-minute bus trip from Herndon in Northumberland County to Flinton on Friday.
The Eagles made the most of their trip to Dr. Roy F. Baker Field.
Line Mountain (2-0), sparked by a running game that amassed 351 rushing yards, scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away in a close game and win, 42-8.
"It was just a poor showing to put it lightly," Glendale coach Chase Hill said. "We told them all week you do your job, you take care of the ball, make the plays like you're supposed to, and we win this game. From the first whistle to the end of the game, we didn't do our job.
"All week we knew what plays they were going to run. We couldn't stop it."
"We came out and started running the ball a little bit," Line Mountain coach Brandon Carson said. "We were able to gain some momentum and start taking it too them a little bit."
Sequence of the game: After Glendale scored a touchdown on a Mike Venslosky 14-yard pass to Levi Hamilton and Hamilton ran for two points, making the score 14-8, the Vikings faced a fourth-and-five from the Line Mountain 30 on their next possession.
Venslosky completed another pass to Hamilton, but the Eagles tackled Hamilton 1 yard shy of the first down. The Eagles scored on their final four drives, including the last one with 46 seconds left.
"I think our defense played pretty well overall," Line Mountain coach Brandon Carson said. "We did give up some yards, but when we needed to buckle down we buckled down. I think that obviously changed the game a little bit."
Player of the game: The Line Mountain running game had three backs with 78 yards rushing or more, including Kaden Dunkelberger, who had 115 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns.
Unsung heroes: The Eagles' offensive line produced a lot of room to run.
Fourth quarter woes: It was the second week in a row the Vikings gave up three TDs in the fourth quarter.
"I don't think we're wearing down," Hill said. "I think things are going south instead of rising up to the occasion. We're kind of folding and letting it happen."
Bus tripping: As for the Eagles, they seemed to enjoy the trip. They were traveling back home after the game.
"It was fun for us," Carson said. "We've traveled for two-and-a-half hours for other games, so we're used to it. It's really beautiful out here. Everybody was really gracious. It was definitely worth it. It wouldn't have been worth it with a loss."
Notable: Glendale running back Tanner Ammerman ran for 100 yards on 25 carries. ... Venslosky completed 13 of 21 passes for 117 yards, the touchdown to Hamilton and was intercepted. ... Line Mountain used two quarterbacks. Preston Derk threw for 58 yards.
Next week: Line Mountain hosts Northern Bedford. Glendale visits Juniata Valley.
