Cambria Heights pulls away in second half

By Rick Weaver 4 min read

PATTON -- Cambria Heights overcame first-half mistakes and dominated Purchase Line in what turned into an easy 41-13 victory in a Heritage Conference football game Friday evening at AmeriServ Bank Field.

Brayden DeArmitt scored three touchdowns, including one on an 85-yard pass from Nolan Clawson. DeArmitt caught four passes for a game-best 107 yards, and he ran 10 yards for another touchdown.

"I would like to see him be a little bit more consistent, and he'll tell you the same thing. I thought he did a good job, but I think we can be more consistent. But (Purchase Line) played us tough and we knew they would," Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis said.

Plays of the game: Purchase Line junior Maddox Frantz answered Bryce Lewis' 1-yard touchdown run with a 92-yard kickoff return.

Brayden DeArmitt replied with an 85-yard kickoff return that put the Highlanders back in front, 13-7. The three scoring plays covered 29 seconds.

Player of the game: Clawson threw for 147 yards, ran for 102 yards and intercepted a pass.

Unsung hero: Cambria Heights senior running back Colton Strong ran for 48 yards on nine rushing attempts, and scored a second-half touchdown as the Highlanders asserted its dominance.

"He runs hard each time," Lewis said.

Most vital statistics: Cambria Heights gained 428 total yards, including 281 on the ground. The difference in halves manifested itself in the Highlanders' penalties, among other matters.

Cambria Heights committed six penalties for 45 yards before halftime, but only one for 10 yards in the second half.

Purchase Line coach Matt Falisec: "They're bigger and stronger and they wore us down. They're a bigger school than us, they have a lot more kids. But our kids battled, and I think they're bigger and stronger up front, they showed that."

Coach Lewis: "They made some big plays, and we knew they had some speed. They got their guys in the open field at times."

DeArmitt: "We eliminated mistakes and we knew what we were supposed to do when we got the ball."

Notable: Cambria Heights freshman Angelo Ranck ran 7 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown. .. Nolan Engle completed a 5-yard pass completion to himself after a Cambria Heights defender batted a pass attempt back to the Purchase Line quarterback. Engle completed 11 of 17 passes for 90 yards. ... Each team committed one turnover. ... Frantz scored two first-half touchdowns. He snagged a 10-yard pass from Engle with 40 seconds left in the first half to pull Purchase Line back within six, 19-13. ... Jack Sherwood was named the homecoming king and Dahntay Sunseri captured homecoming queen honors in ceremonies held before the game. ... A moment of silence was observed prior to kickoff to commemorate the 25 years since the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville on Sept. 11, 2001. Highlanders players, clad in their all-black uniforms, carried U.S. flags as they entered the field. The halftime show featured an assortment of patriotic songs.

Team records: Purchase Line (1-2), Cambria Heights (3-0).
