PATTON -- A stellar performance on both sides of the football led Cambria Heights to a 49-0 shutout victory over Heritage Conference foe Homer-Center on Friday night.
The victory extended the Highlanders' perfect season to 8-0, which is Cambria Heights' longest win streak since the team won its first nine games on the way to claiming the Heritage Conference title in 2021.
Cambria Heights can clinch the conference championship with a victory over West Shamokin next week.
"Right now, we're just focused on one game at a time and getting better each week," Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis said. "I want to see us continue to get better at practice. We're holding ourselves to a very high standard, and so far the guys have done very well."
Players of the game: Stephen Nelen and Marshall Eckenrode led the way for Cambria Heights.
Nelen scored on a 55-yard touchdown run to open the game and hauled in a 33-yard score from Isaac Weiland. He also picked off two of Homer-Center's three interceptions.
"Right now, the way we're playing really gives us a great feeling," Nelen said. "We have the chance to clinch the conference championship next week on our home field, and it would be great if we can go out with a bang. I know the guys are excited, and so am I."
Eckenrode also found the end zone twice for the Highlanders, catching a 52-yard touchdown pass and scoring on a 19-yard run.
Most vital statistics: Friday marked the second consecutive game the Highlanders forced an opponent into negative rushing yards.
Homer-Center mustered minus-4 yards on 12 carries on the way to compiling 17 total yards and one first down in the contest. The Wildcats turned the ball over four times and punted on its other five possessions. Luke Mulraney returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown for the Highlanders.
The Cambria Heights defense pitched its fourth shutout of the season and has now held all eight of its opponents to 14 points or less.
"We had a great week of practice, and that really translated to the game," Highlanders senior Marshall Eckenrode said. "Our defense has been very consistent this year. We just all do our jobs and make sure they're done well. We all fill the holes we're supposed to fill, and there's none for them to go through."
Notable: Offensively, Cambria Heights scored 43 or more points for the fifth time in eight games, including four of the past five contests and three straight ... The Highlanders recorded 437 total yards with 352 coming on the ground.
Records: Homer-Center 2-6, Cambria Heights 8-0.
