Williamsburg send-off
A pep rally will be held at Williamsburg Community High School at 10:05 a.m. Thursday ahead of Friday’s PIAA Class 1A girls basketball championship game against Delco Christian.
The Lady Blue Pirates will exit the school around 10:50 a.m. amid a community celebration to board a bus and leave for Hershey around 11 a.m. The championship game is slated for noon Friday and will be televised by PCN and can be heard on WBRX-FM (Mix 94.7).

Williamsburg’s opponent in Friday’s PIAA championship game will be making its first state title appearance in its program’s history.
Rather than getting caught up in all of the hoopla surrounding the event, Delaware County Christian coach Jake Godino said his message to his players will be to just stay the same when they face Williamsburg at noon Friday at Hershey’s Giant Center in the Class 1A girls final.

“We’re gonna talk about just being ourselves,” Godino said on Wednesday. “We’ve played 31 games — why would we change anything up for this? There’s a goofy side to our team, and we want to just let that happen. This is the biggest game and it means a ton, but we’re going to do what we always do.”
What Delco Christian has been doing recently is a lot of winning. Godino took a team that went 10-16 two years ago — in his first season back after a previous one-year stint — to 25-5 last year and to 29-2 this season.
Led by freshman star guard Dominique Good, the Knights went undefeated in the 13-team Bicentennial League and then avenged three straight losses to Sacred Heart Academy in the District 1 1A final by winning this year’s title game, 48-43.
Delco Christian won its first three state playoff games before Tuesday’s semifinals when it knocked off Our Lady of Lourdes Regional, 44-41. Lourdes had ended Delco’s season last year in the PIAA quarterfinals.
“In the middle of the game (Tuesday), when Lourdes was making a run, one of our players, Anna Latchford, grabbed (point guard) Ella Stinger and said, ‘what do you need? what do you want me to do?”’ Godino said. “We heard that on the bench, and we love seeing that type of character and behavior. They’re all unselfish — any one of them can have a fantastic game.”
Good produced the most impressive game for the Knights when she scored a school-record 43 points in a win during the regular season over Phil-Mont Christian. The old record of 41 was held by Godino, who was a star player at DelCo Christian from 2004-08 before joining the Temple University men’s team as a walk-on.
Good averages 20.6 points per game, while sophomore Stinger averages 13.7. Sophomore Mary O’Donnell led the Knights on Tuesday with 17 points. Those three join junior forwards Latchford and Audrey Bechtel in the starting lineup.
The Knights’ top reserves are sophomores and freshmen, and they have just one senior on the roster. But, like Williamsburg, they’ve grown up quickly through the season.
Delco Christian’s only losses are to Springside Chestnut Hill Academy and Marple Newtown during the regular season.
“Throughout the season, I’ve grown to trust them,” Godino said. “They adjust and have made so many good decisions in real time that we’ve had to develop a secret signal where if I call a play and they want a different call, we have the secret signal. They’re young, but their basketball IQ is really high.”
Williamsburg coach Angela Detwiler said she was spending her Wednesday evening watching film on Delco Christian. Detwiler has state final experience as a player, when as a member of Bishop Guilfoyle, the Lady Marauders lost to Delone Catholic in the 2004 Class 2A championship.
“Having played in the game … there’s the big floor and a lot of attention on you,” Detwiler said. “But you have to stay focused.”
Godino said he saw that focus when he watched the film of Williamsburg.
“They’re fantastic,” Godino said of the Lady Pirates. “They’re well-coached, have high energy and are hardworking. The look every bit like a championship team.”
