Rebounding helps Lady Tigers continue to rule 5A

CRESSON — Hollidaysburg girls basketball coach Deanna Jubeck had a message for her team after the Lady Tigers closed the regular season with two losses and lost their first game in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference playoffs.

Rebound.

Not so much from those losses, but literally, against a Johnstown team with two 1,000-point scorers including senior center NaLonai Tisinger in Friday’s District 4-6 Class 5A championship game at Mount Aloysius.

It was pretty clear everyone got the message in a 52-43 victory.

Hollidaysburg outrebounded Johnstown, 54-25, and all four seniors grabbed at least 10 rebounds — Makenna Weimert had 24 points and 12 rebounds, Clare Padamonsky had 13 rebounds, Jillian Sidney had 11 rebounds and Alana Lightner finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“We really put a lot of focus on it the last couple days at practice and made sure we boxed out well,” Jubeck said. “Tisinger is a darn good rebounder, and we knew to be in this game and possibly win it, we needed to keep her off the board and limit her second chance opportunities. It was huge to have that many kids step up and take that to heart.”

The victory was Hollidaysburg’s sixth consecutive district championship and the fourth for Weimert, who came up with a big basket every time the Lady Tigers needed one.

“It’s a great feeling to get it done all four years and win district championships,” Weimert said. “It made us focus (every time Johnstown got close), and I knew I had to score or get a pass to an open teammate for a score. It’s a great feeling to win.”

Hollidaysburg looked like it would cruise to the championship up 14 midway through the third quarter after taking control in the first half in which Johnstown scored just 13 points.

“The first quarter, we kind of had a lid on the rim,” Johnstown coach Xavier Thomas said. “They were missing. We were missing. Turnovers were happening, but they were getting more rebounds. We always talk about how you can win a game in the first quarter the same way you can win a game in the fourth quarter, and I think they kind of won the game in the first quarter with that big lead.”

But Marcella White got hot from 3-point range and shot the Lady Trojans back into the game late with her team-high 19 points. Her 3-pointer with 29.2 seconds left cut Hollidaysburg’s lead to five.

“We went into freestyle mode,” Thomas said. “In the fourth quarter, that was better for us. We played free and didn’t have a lot to think about. We just played basketball, and I think we played well. We have been here three times now, and I’m proud these seniors have been able to get Johnstown back to being at this level.”

But Weimert went 4-for-4 from the foul line to close out the victory.

“We did a great job of finding Makenna, and she was able to bail us out when the game got a little bit tight,” Jubeck said. “She was able to break through and get some layups or make some excellent passes to her teammates for layups.”

Lightner played a big role in this season’s championship after being limited to injuries in her first year at Hollidaysburg last season.

“This feels amazing. I was willing to play any role we needed tonight,” Lightner said. “I’m just so thankful we got it done. I’m just so happy for myself and my teammates. We knew they were really good at crashing the boards. We worked on that a lot at practice this week. It was definitely a focus.”

Hollidaysburg has now won all but two of the District 6 5A titles since the PIAA switched to six classifications in 2017. Obama Academy and Portage are the only other two teams to win one.

“The girls know we have 22 regular season games to prepare for one game in late February,” Jubeck said. “They want to win this game to give themselves a chance to see what they can do in the state playoffs. Hats off to our seniors. They put the team on their back today, and all four of them did a great job.”

Hollidaysburg will host the seventh seed from the WPIAL in the first round of the PIAA tournament on Saturday, March 7.
