Northern Bedford Lady Panthers can’t keep up with Everett
LOYSBURG — Friday night’s first quarter between the Everett and Northern Bedford girls basketball teams showed signs of a defensive affair.
Once the second began, however, it was the Lady Warrior press that took over and they didn’t look back as they went on 25-2 run en route to a 49-20 win in an Inter-County Conference contest at Northern Bedford County High School.
The Lady Warriors have won 13 of their first 15 contests, while the Lady Panthers fell to 9-6.
Alyssa Yeatts drained a pair of 3-pointers as part of Northern Bedford’s first quarter effort to lead her team’s efforts. That however was as close as the Lady Panthers got.
Some of the separation in the second happened thanks to Jade Colledge, who buried a pair of early 3-pointers for Everett, and then from there turnovers started piling up.
About halfway through the first, Emma Ritchey came up with a takeaway, getting the bucket before about, more than one minute later, she added a 3-ball on a turnover to make it 27-11.
“Turnovers started happening in the second quarter,” Northern Bedford coach Jon Ewart said. “They came down and hit about three shots, and we didn’t even get a shot off. When a good team gets on a roll, it’s tough to put your foot down.”
Ritchey added a runner with less than a minute remaining in the half to make it 34-11 at the break. Northern Bedford was held without a field goal for about 10 minutes as the drought extended early into the third quarter.
Colledge led all scorers with 17 points — including 12 points from beyond the arc — and Emma Ritchey followed with 14.
“Early, we got the shots we wanted, they just didn’t go in,” Everett coach Keith Moyer said. “We defended well, kept it close, and then once the shots started falling, we got a nice lead. They were well prepared.”
Moyer said that Colledge’s performance comes off some recent struggles, but is proud of the way she fought through the adversity.
“Colledge didn’t shoot the ball well last week,” he said. “They sagged off of her and she missed the first couple of shots. But she’s a senior that’s won a state championship in softball, been to the elite eight in basketball. She’s tough and she kept shooting. Once she found her stroke, it was a good night for her.”
Colledge’s performance, along with Emma Ritchey’s, caught Ewart’s attention as they helped spark the Everett offense.
“They shot well in the second quarter, that’s for sure,” he said. Colledge, she really hit fire in the second quarter, real tough player there. Throw in (Emma) Ritchey from the outside, she again shot lights out.”
Ally Ritchey’s turnover late in the third, which she converted into a layup, sent the game into the running clock.
Northern Bedford will start a four-game road trip on Tuesday when the Lady Panthers head to McConnellsburg.
