Success for Bishop Guilfoyle girls basketball team starts on defense
Kristi Kaack
The Bishop Guilfoyle Academy girls basketball team came out firing with intensity on the defensive end of the floor in its 61-32 victory over Huntingdon on Wednesday night at the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium.
The win kept Bishop Guilfoyle unbeaten at 9-0.
“We still have some things that we need to work on,” Bishop Guilfoyle coach Kristi Kaack said. “I thought in the first half we defended with a lot of intensity, and the ball went in the basket.”
In the first frame, the Lady Marauders held the Lady Bearcats to five points.
“We always want to make sure that we defend the right way,” Kaack said. “When we get in situations like that, we’re trying to get different kids in the game.”
Junior guard Morgan Ruggery led all Guilfoyle scorers with 15 points, and Anberlyn Petrecca scored 14.
“I think we did a really good job of just sharing the ball as a team,” Ruggery said. “We came out really strong, and really moved the ball, and got some good wide-open layups.”
Even in a lopsided victory, the Lady Marauders focus on discipline on both ends of the court.
“I think, for us especially, we just work on being disciplined and playing our game,” Ruggery said. “And kind of working on the things we need to work on, whether that’s on offense or defense.”
At the end of the day, the Lady Marauders’ stellar athleticism on both ends of the floor was too much for Huntingdon to handle.
“They’re pretty aggressive — a lot of all pressure,” Huntingdon coach Cass Book said. “Our shots weren’t falling, and we weren’t getting as many off.”
Despite their 4-7 record, the Lady Bearcats continue to focus on growing together as a team, Book said.
“We’re looking at how we’re defining success, and ways we can grow,” Book said. “We’re looking at trying to compete for 32 minutes, and things we can control.”
Bishop Guilfoyle welcomes Bellwood-Antis to the Pleasant Valley Gymnasium this Friday. The Lady Bearcats host the Hollidaysburg Lady Tigers.
