Eyer nails five 3-pointers in leading Lady Lions
Girls basketball
Altoona girls basketball coach Chris Fleegle said after Wednesday’s game with Carlisle that at halftime, his team was talking about getting Raylin Eyer the record for 3-pointers in a single game.
It didn’t work out as Eyer didn’t play much in the second half, and she was still four away from tying the record. But it was the damage she did in the first half that sparked everything.
Eyer hit five from long distance in the first half, going for 20 points total with all of them coming before halftime in a 63-29 win over the Thundering Herd at the Altoona Fieldhouse.
“It didn’t work out. We played team basketball,” Fleegle said of getting Eyer the record. “It’s nice to see they don’t care who’s scoring. They’re excited for their teammates.”
The Lady Lions (14-3) are back to their winning ways with five in a row since a Jan. 6 hiccup against Central Dauphin.
Carlisle (3-12) fell behind 27-12 after the first quarter, and never recovered.
“Chris is a really good coach. Every year I know he’s going to have something up his sleeve,” Carlisle coach Kelsey Cole said. “His girls — they can all play. They can all shoot. You can tell they’ve been brought up through the youth program. Great kids, great program, great coach.”
Eyer was a key in jumping out to a 27-point quarter to open the game. She hit three treys in the opening period, and was also fouled behind the 3-point line and hit all three ensuing free throws. Eyer had 14 in the quarter.
“It felt good to finally hit a couple shots and get us going,” Eyer said.
“We struggle sometimes getting off to a fast start,” Fleegle said. “It’s one of those things where it’s not who you play, it’s how we play. I was really happy with them taking care of business early, and getting a lot of players involved in the game tonight.”
Eyer hit another pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter to help Altoona go up 39-21 at the break.
Although Eyer was held scoreless in the second half, Altoona started off the second half with a 9-0 run. Brionna Hudson sank a 3-pointer to start, while Kendall Cogan had a bucket and a pair of free throws to go with another Hudson layin.
Fleegle emptied his bench in the fourth quarter as the Lady Lions had 18 players check in.
After Eyer’s 20 points, Hudson had 16 and Zaelinh Nguyen-Moore chipped in seven points.
Sadie McMeeklin led Carlisle with nine points.
Altoona is back in action on Friday night on the road at Chambersburg.
