CRESSON -- Last weekend's scrimmage against Hollidaysburg and Richland showed how much turnover Penn Cambria would be dealing with this season.
"We scrimmaged two great teams last week, and they took advantage of some of our inexperience," Penn Cambria coach Jason Grassi said. "We know we have the guys that can get the job done. We had to get refocused, and we had a great week of practice this week."
That practice showed itself from the opening drive as the Panthers went down the field and scored in nine plays and cruised to a 35-13 win over Somerset at Panther Stadium in LHAC action.
"That's what happens when you practice well," Grassi said. "We had a lot of issues with penalties which we can't do. Overall, I thought our energy was where we needed to be."
Sequence of the game: Panther QB Evan Latterner's pass to RB Nate Mack from 40 yards in second quarter helped set up RB Corbin Vinglish's 13-yard reception from Latterner to put the game away in the second quarter.
Player of the game: Vinglish racked up 113 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown and finished with 126 total yards and two scores, the second on a reception.
Unsung hero: Colin Gongloff helped spark the Panther defense in holding Somerset to five consecutive three-and-outs in the first half.
Most vital statistics: Penn Cambria held Somerset to just two first downs in the first half and forced three turnovers for the game.
Grassi on Vinglish: "Corbin is one of the best players in the area on both sides of the football, even on special teams when he's out there. He can line us up, he can do things for us. Evan, for his first start I thought, did a pretty solid job. He has the ability to throw the football and run the football well.''
Somerset coach Braden Fochtman: "They're a very hard-nosed team, very disciplined, and they love playing the game. I thought the defense they had running was great. The new quarterback, Evan (Latterner), he's very good at improvising. He got out of the pocket and made a lot of great runs, converted a lot of third downs. That's a really good offset to the hard runner Vinglish is, and he's good defensive player as well.''
Vinglish on Latterner: "There's always a chemistry there when you play your whole lives together. That was there. Practices, even just in school being together. He knows he can count on me and I can count on him.''
Notable: Penn Cambria recognized members of the Mainline Football players who are part of the program's elementary football program. ... Noah Jones' pick-6 in the third quarter activated the running clock. ... Penn Cambria forced three turnovers for the night. ... The Panthers were flagged 10 times for 60 yards. ... It was the first game at Panther Stadium with the new LED-lighting system.
Records: Somerset (0-1), Penn Cambria (1-0).
Next week: Somerset hosts Huntingdon while Penn Cambria travels to Bald Eagle Area next Friday.
