CLAYSBURG -- Claysburg-Kimmel's balance on offense has improved throughout the season, resulting in an 8-2 record and a third-seed in the District 6 1A playoffs.
That balance was on full display Friday against Glendale. Claysburg ran for 140 yards and passed for another 180 on its way to a 28-6 win over the Vikings at Bulldog Stadium.
"We found our niche and have been able to balance a lot better," Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick said. "I credit our coaches and offensive linemen. They really knuckled down and said we've got to get better at this, and we have gotten better."
Plays of the game: Glendale opened the game with an impressive 15-play, 80-yard drive for an early 6-0 lead. Logan Skebeck and Tanner Ammerman combined for 53 yards rushing on the drive before Skebeck found Levi Hamilton open crossing the middle for a 20-yard touchdown.
Claysburg adjusted after that, holding the Vikings to just 106 yards the rest of the game.
"We adjusted the linebackers a little bit. We weren't in the right places, but mainly we weren't playing aggressive enough," middle linebacker Collton Replogle said. "We were able to switch our mentality and alignments a little and shut 'em down."
The Bulldogs needed just three plays to take the lead. QB Mason Campagna hit Tyler Mowry in stride on a post pattern for a 39-yard TD and a 7-6 edge.
"Our offense is really electric. It's kind of hard to cover us. I saw the safety drop down and just laid it up to Ty," Campagna said.
Claysburg added to the lead in the second quarter when Campagna found an open Gavin Treon along the goal line for a 4-yard score. The pass was a bit wide, but Treon reached out and pulled it in with one hand.
"It was kind of a broken play. I have full trust in Gavin that if I throw it anywhere near him, he'll come down with it," Campagna said. "He's one of the best receivers we've had around here in a long time."
Claysburg went up 21-6 just before halftime on a Campagna 1-yard sneak. The Bulldogs drove 80 yards in 1:37. Campagna went 4-of-4 on the drive covering 51 yards.
Player of the game: Campagna had a hand in all four touchdowns. He completed 12-of-17 passes for 180 yards and two scores and ran for another 85 yards and a pair of short touchdowns runs to close out the victory.
Unsung heroe: Kicker/punter Trevor Brown made several impactful plays starting with an onside kick that he recovered in the first quarter. Brown also ran for 21 yards on a fake punt in the third quarter to keep a drive alive that ended with a Campagna 2-yard TD run. He added a 50-yard punt in the fourth quarter.
Notable: After a week 7 loss to Claysburg that dropped Glendale to 1-6, the Vikings rallied to win three straight and secure the sixth seed, setting up a rematch with Claysburg.
Glendale coach Chase Hill: "Most teams would have folded at 1-6 and said the season's over. We have strong leadership. Guys that have been here before. They kind of got everyone in line. It's a real testament to our team."
Records: Glendale (4-7); Claysburg-Kimmel (9-2).
Next week: Glendale's season has ended. Claysburg-Kimmel plays at Juniata Valley in the semifinals.
