Moshannon Valley defense has no answer for Claysburg-Kimmel’s Campagna

HOUTZDALE -- There simply weren't any answers on the Moshannon Valley sideline for Claysburg-Kimmel quarterback Mason Campagna on Friday night.

Campagna, who has been a threat with his arm and his legs all season, threw for 181 yards and ran for 151 more in the Bulldogs' 29-13 win over Mo Valley.

The Bulldogs and Knights were No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in the District 6 Class 1A standings coming into the week, meaning the two teams would play each other in Claysburg in the first round if the season ended last week. But Claysburg coach Chuck Kassick had no reservations for the possibility of seeing the Black Knights again in a few weeks.

"You kind of know who's going to be in (the playoff field), but just not exactly where," Kassick said. "We're just trying to win games and see where the seeds end up at the end of the year. But we have to stay healthy and keep playing hard."

Play of the game: With the Bulldogs up 9-7 early in the third quarter, Mo Valley lined up for a JC Smith 21-yard field goal after the Black Knights recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half. A made field goal would have given Mo Valley a 10-9 lead. Instead, the Bulldog defense blocked the kick, and Mo Valley squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead.

Player of the game: Campagna was excellent for the Bulldogs, going 19-for-33 passing for 181 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed 21 times for 151 yards and three rushing TDs.

Unsung heroes: The Bulldog defense had a great effort, only allowing Mo Valley into their own territory three times for the night. One trip in Claysburg territory came due to a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half where the Knights had the ball at the 9-yard line. Another drive in Claysburg's end finished with a Brayden Haney interception.

Most vital statistic: Claysburg nearly doubled Mo Valley in total offense, winning the battle 402-204.

Kassick: "Our defense really showed up and played hard. Other than that last drive, our defense was in shutdown mode. They crossed the 50 once in the first half and we had that goal line stand in the second half. Our defense played lights out. I have nothing but good things to say on that side of the ball."

Moshannon Valley coach Chris Davidson: "We shot ourselves in the foot. When we go back and watch this on film, we're going to be absolutely disgusted with some of the mistakes we made.

"We're just lacking continuity right now. (Claysburg) is a team that's running on all cylinders. We're just trying to find a way to creep into the playoffs and make life difficult for somebody."

Campagna: "It was a tough game and we battled to the end. We probably should have scored more points, but that's how football goes."

Notable: Mo Valley, which has had under 20 healthy players at times this season, got a couple more players back late this week that were previously away with injuries. ... The Black Knights' first TD came on a 67-yard kickoff return with no time left on the clock in the first half. The other came on a 16-yard TD catch from Brady Mihalko to Jack Moore. ... The Bulldogs' Jacob Herline was Campagna's favorite target, finishing with 82 yards on six receptions. Tyler Mowry also added six catches for 46 yards. ... Both teams will want to clean up penalties. Claysburg was penalized six times for 45 yards, while Mo Valley was flagged eight times for 72 yards.

Next week: Claysburg will travel to Mount Union, which beat Southern Huntingdon Friday night, while Mo Valley hosts West Branch.
