Claysburg-Kimmel Bulldogs slow down, but still topple Glendale Vikings

FLINTON -- Claysburg-Kimmel had scored 44 or more points in the last four games, including a whopping 73 against Southern Huntingdon last week, heading into Friday night's game against Glendale at Dr. Roy F. Baker Field.

When the Bulldogs erupted for 32 points while keeping the Vikings scoreless in the first half, they seemed well on their way to another offensive tidal wave.

But the Vikings had a much better second half, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter. They were also keeping C-K scoreless until star quarterback Mason Campagna scored his third rushing touchdown on a 28-yard with 2:02 remaining in a 39-14 win.

"We jumped on them really early, but we got complacent," Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick said. "Credit to Glendale. They didn't come out in the second half and just lay down. They fought back. They played hard. Glendale's level of play came up. Credit to that coaching staff and those kids for not giving up."

"The message after the game was we can't wait until we're down four scores to get going," Glendale coach Chase Hill said. "I told them whenever we come out and do what we're supposed to do we're a good team and can put the points up. We can't wait until we're in the hole to try to fight our way back out of it."

Play of the game: With his team holding an 18-0 lead, Campagna broke a couple tackles and carried defenders into the end zone on an 18-yard touchdown run with 3:56 left in the first half.

"That was 100 percent huge," Kassick said. "If we don't get in there, the momentum may swing a little earlier. That puts us over the edge to say we're in a good spot."

Player of the game: Campagna completed 15 of 23 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 111 yards on 13 carries and scored three touchdowns. He also intercepted two passes on defense.

"He's a stud," Kassick said. "He's a true player. We go as he goes. He's our leader on both sides of the football. I like the ball in his hands every play because I trust him. He makes the right plays."

"He's a good athlete," Hill said. "He was throwing the ball real well and running it well. Our tackling wasn't very good. All week we preached that's a kid you have to wrap up. We had him a few times and we didn't wrap up. We like to pride ourselves on our tackling, but we didn't show it tonight."

Unsung heroes: The big Bulldogs offensive line opened up holes for Campagna and protected him.

Plenty of pickoffs: The Bulldogs intercepted Glendale quarterback Logan Skebeck four times. In addition to Campagna's picks, Brayden Haney and Paydden Knisely had interceptions.

"We work at it," Kassick said. "We thought we had them scouted pretty well. I think we played pretty well."

"They were playing sticky coverage," Hill said. "They got some pressure and Logan didn't have as much time as he needed. They were switching up looks and their corners were playing good coverage."

Skebeck scores: Skebeck threw a touchdown pass and ran for another in the third quarter.

Notable: It was a pink out game for breast cancer awareness, and the players wore pink gear. ... C-K's Nathan Fee kicked a 27-yard field goal for the first points of the game. ... The Bulldogs outgained the Vikings 370-210.
