EBENSBURG -- Penn Cambria held on to the Goal Post Trophy by shutting out Central Cambria, 36-0, at Central Cambria Alumni Stadium Friday night.
From the start, Penn Cambria had control of the game and got its scoring started late in the first quarter on a goal-line rush from Corbin Vinglish.
The Panther defense held strong, and Vinglish added his second score later in the second frame. Their defense continued to fire off all cylinders, allowing just three first downs in the first half.
The Panthers continued to dominate the game, despite only leading 13-0 at halftime. Brady Jones added a 19-yard touchdown right before their defense forced a safety off a bad snap.
Vinglish shortly added his third touchdown of the game, and the defense forced another turnover on downs. That allowed Ian Beck to score the Panthers' fifth rushing touchdown of the evening.
The Panther defense shut down the Red Devils, holding them to just five first downs and less than 100 yards rushing.
Play of the game: Brady Jones avoided a sack on second-and-20 and hit Vinglish on a screen for 40 yards, setting up their second score of the game. A sack there would have likely given Central Cambria good field position to tie the game.
Player of the game: RB Corbin Vinglish rushed for three touchdowns, ran for 72 yards and caught a 40-yard pass.
Unsung hero: Brady Jones competed 10 passes for 137 yards and ran for 50 with a touchdown.
Most vital statistic: Penn Cambria's defense limited Central Cambria to five first downs and less than 100 yards of offense.
Penn Cambria coach Jason Grassi: "Our defense took the challenge this week. We said we were going to shut down (Ryan Chappell) and we took it personally. That was their goal tonight, and we did what we needed to do to win the game. I'm so proud of their effort tonight."
Central Cambria coach Wade Klezek: "Too many mistakes early on where we put ourselves in awful field positions. That makes it tough and lets them play downhill and aggressive. You do that and they'll make you pay for it."
Vinglish: "We practiced all week to run the ball and that's what we did."
Notable: Central Cambria's RB Ryan Chappell averaged 179 rushing yards per game heading into the game and finished the night with just 61 yards.
Records: Penn Cambria (4-1); Central Cambria (2-3).
Next week: Penn Cambria hosts Westmont Hilltop, and Central Cambria travels to Chestnut Ridge.
