Turnovers, Penn Cambria bite Bedford

CRESSON -- Penn Cambria and Bedford looked like they were heading for a back-and-forth affair in their LHAC matchup at the Penn Cambria Athletic Field as both teams played to a near stalemate in the first half.

But, the Bisons were bitten by the turnover bug, and the Panthers managed to put the game away in a hurry.

Thanks to a muffed punt along with an interception, Penn Cambria never looked back as they went on to score 27 unanswered points as they pounded Bedford, 35-10.

"We didn't play with much energy in the first half," Penn Cambria coach Jason Grassi said. "We just didn't come out ready to go, and that's on me. They played with energy (in the second half). It was fun to watch because that's the way we want to play Penn Cambria football."

Quarter of the game: Penn Cambria recorded two takeaways during the fourth quarter which turned into 13 points including recovering a muffed punt as well as an interception by Evan Latterner.

Player of the game: Penn Cambria's Corbin Vinglish record 18 carries on 114 yards with two touchdowns

Unsung heroes: The Panther defense held Bedford to one first down in the second half and offense Ian Beck recorded 6 rushes for 43 yards with two third quarter touchdowns.

Most vital statistic: The Panther offense recorded 11 first downs in the second half and on their final scoring drive ate up over 6 minutes of game action to put the game away while scoring 27 second half points to finish the game.

Grassi on Beck and Vinglish at running back: "Beck's a young guy. We've been working him in, he's been doing a really great job for us in the jayvee games. He brought the energy just from a defensive standpoint and an offensive standpoint, special teams he's running down the field. It was nice to have him as a compliment to Vinglish. It's nice to have that 1-2 punch there in the backfield.''

Bedford coach Kevin Steele: "We're not in a position where we can afford to turn the ball over. For us to be successful, we got to take care of the football, play fundamentally sound, tackle well, all the things that win football games, and we didn't do that at times tonight. We have to be better in all three phases. One first down in the second half is not good enough. We got to be able to control the line of scrimmage or at least get some continuity on offense. Defensively we didn't line up well, we didn't tackle well. We just didn't play what I would call Bedford football.''

Notable: Bedford led at halftime 10-8 courtesy of an Owen Lantz field goal in the closing minute. ... Penn Cambria ended up outgaining Bedford on the ground 211-65. ... Both teams lost a fumble which the opposing offense turned into a touchdown. ... Grant Gides was the top Penn Cambria receiver recording four catches for 53 yards and a third quarter score which helped cap off the explosion.
