Northern Bedford football coach Gary Black finds some positives in setback

LOYSBURG -- The Northern Bedford football team came into Friday night's game against the Berlin Brothersvalley Mountaineers still searching for their first win of the season, but couldn't come out on top as the Panthers fell to the Mountaineers, 16-0 at Panther Community Stadium.

Despite its 0-5 record, the coaching staff believes the effort has been there from the Panthers.

"Our kids gave outstanding effort," Panthers' coach Garry Black said. "We prepared really hard all week and then we played really hard."

After a scoreless first quarter, the Panthers' defense pushed the Mountaineers back 18 yards, forcing them to settle for a 30-yard field goal from Seth Kimmel with :33 left in the half.

In the second half, junior wide receiver Carson Janidlo hauled in a 16-yard pass from his brother, quarterback Brady Janidlo, to boost Berlin's lead to 10-0 after three quarters of play.

"I tell our guys every week, when your number is called you got to be ready," Mountaineer coach Dante Paul said." I think we have a couple guys that can get loose on any given play."

With 9:54 left in the fourth quarter, Sam Speicher caught a pass from Brady Janidlo from 11 yards out to seal the game for Berlin.

"We talk all the time about being tough and playing with a lot of effort," Paul said. "We drove the ball down the field and shot ourselves in the foot a couple times, but our defense stepped up.

For most of the season, the injury bug has haunted Northern Bedford.

"Injuries continue to ravage us," Black said. "No one is going to feel bad for you, but we're really struggling without linemen."

As the season continues for Northern Bedford, Black and his staff are working to keep the Panthers going.

"I'm going to keep saying it, and I hope people keep buying into what we're saying because for 0-5, we're not a bad football team," Black said. "To me, that's the most life we've shown on defense."

Player of the game: Mountaineer senior running back Seth Kimmel racked up 121 yards on the ground.

Unsung hero: Carson Janidlo tallied five carries for 71 yards.

Most vital statistic: Berlin's 212 yards on the ground.

Paul: "At the end of the day, anytime you walk off the field with the win, it's a good night. We have a lot of stuff to clean up."  

Black: "On third and fourth downs where they had long yardage, they made plays. They're getting scores, and that continues to be where we get ourselves in a spot where we struggle on third and fourth down."

Notable: The Panthers only committed two penalties for 15 yards.
