EVERETT -- Two Bedford County neighbors convened for their yearly meeting on the gridiron on a gorgeous Friday evening.
Everett enjoyed its role as hosts for the event as Warrior Jonathan Cooper delivered with some first-half pin-point passing, and teammate Jakobie Harman powered the running game in the second half to secure a 24-13 win over Northern Bedford.
Down 12-0 at the half, Northern kept the winners on edge in the game's second half with some big plays of its own. Junior Zach Bowers went to the races with a 93-yard touchdown jaunt. Everett responded with two Harman touchdowns before NBC's Connor Donaldson hauled in a 16-yard pass from Ben Cottle to set up a Ben Clark score to set the final.
Plays of the game: Everett's Gavin Goodrich hauled in a 38-yard pass from Cooper on the Warriors' first play from scrimmage to go deep in NB territory. Tyson Grove put the winners up by two scores with a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch that covered 12 yards in possession No. 2.
Players of the game: Cooper had 97 yards and two passing touchdowns. Harman had 243 rushing yards on 25 carries.
Unsung heroes: Everett's defense kept the Panthers from scoring in the first half and helped keep a double-digit lead for most of the second half.
Most vital statistic: Harman had 152 yards on 12 carries in the third quarter alone.
Everett coach Brian Koontz: "We had a hot start with our early passing game. We knew what we wanted to do when they were keying on 5 (Harman). It is good to be 3-1 despite making some silly mistakes. They (NBC) have beaten us handily the last several years so we are happy to be where we are at heading into the middle of the season. Except for one big run to a good athlete our defense played well"
NBC coach Garry Black: "Both Coach Koontz and I have said the difference between the two teams is a year. They (Everett) have a good group of seniors that play well and are a year better than us. We are young like a lot of teams out there. Harman is an outstanding player who was outstanding running the ball tonight. I give kudos to their line as well as to our guys. We are down four guys from our offensive line, 2 from the beginning of the year and 2 from last week. We're still Northern Bedford and won't be going away soon. I am proud of the way we battle."
Notable: Bowers' big play led the Panthers' offense. He led the team with 122 rushing yards...Clark added 81 yards ....Everett's Levi Cornell hauled in a 19-yard pass for the game's first score on his team's first possession...Harman's biggest moment was a 65-yard, third-quarter touchdown run....Everett's Cooper Hall intercepted a Cottle pass and returned it inside the red zone to set up his team's final score. ... Everett broke a six-game losing streak to the Panthers.
