CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Hollidaysburg had to punt the ball on its first offensive drive of the night against Allegany, Md.
The Golden Tigers began to piece together a little bit of every aspect of the game as their special teams helped their defense, which in turn propelled the offense to score three unanswered touchdowns in the opening half to seize control en route to a 40-13 victory on the road over the Campers at Fort Hill High School's Greenway Stadium.
The kickoff team and the punting unit put Allegany in deep territory, which the defense was able to get three stops and turn the ball back over to the offense.
The offense took it from there as they continued the strong complimentary play as the running attack set up the passing game.
"That started on special teams. … Our defense played well as we had them (Allegany) inside the 20-yard line three or four straight possessions," Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre said. "In return, we (offense) had to go less than 40 yards (to score). We call that great team football -- all three phases had a part in that 21-point lead when we had those three drives. … It was awesome to see all three phases spin off each other.".
Play of the game: Hollidaysburg began the running game very heavily favoring Carter Muth as the junior carried several times on inside handoffs. With the Tigers leading 14-0, following a Muth run up the middle, quarterback Cole DeLattre read the defense selling out for the Muth run again, and faked the handoff before tucking the ball and sprinting around the right side 17-yards untouched to the end zone to put Hollidaysburg up 21-0 after the Devin Walters PAT.
Player of the game: Carter Muth carried the ball 12 times for 80 yards and scored three touchdowns. The first came on a 1-yard push up the middle with 2:59 left in the first quarter to get the Golden Tigers on the board and kickstart his team's three TDs on three straight possessions. The junior tacked on two more scores in the third stanza as he scored from 8 yards away and then followed with a 7-yard touchdown to put his team up 34-7 with 2:43 remaining in the third.
Cole DeLattre: "After the first drive, we kind of just settled in. It's happened to us before as against Altoona, the first drive, we fumbled. It's really a team game -- just staying with it as a team and playing hard together."
Unsung hero: Cole DeLattre completed 7-of-13 passes in the opening half for 120 yards, including back-to-back fade tosses to Josh Banks for 22-yards to end the first quarter and then a 23-yard TD strike on the next play in the side of the end zone to Ethan Coke to make the score 14-0. In addition to the 17-yard TD run on the ensuing Hollidaysburg drive, the senior rushed seven times for 55 yards and also punted twice for a 45.5 average.
Cole DeLattre: "We knew if they (Allegany) went to man (defense), which they did, we could get that little slot-fade. We just made the outside guy kind of stop, and we had all this room, and we know our athletes are pretty top-tier to go make a play."
Most vital statistic: The Campers gained 89 rushing yards in the first half, but 38 of them came on a single run by Amanni Blowe. The other 18 attempts garnered just 2.8 yards per carry.
Coach DeLattre: "I thought we tackled well for the most part. We had a couple of times where we were at the point of attack and they (Allegany) bounced off. … I thought for the most part, we got to the ball with 11 guys and we tackled well. So, that was awesome."
Notable: The last Tiger touchdown came in the fourth when Vincent Consiglio crossed the goal line from 3 yards out at 7:39. With one second remaining in the half, Walters, a freshman, just missed on a 50-yard field goal attempt. … Allegany got on the scoreboard when Khiante Bible powered through on a 1-yard run late in the second stanza. With Hollidaysburg starters on the bench, the Campers would set the final when Bible hauled in a 23-yard pass from Dylan Blank with 5:12 left to go. Hollidaysburg's Caden Dodson blocked the extra point. … Each starting QB threw a pick as Vince Albarano intercepted Blank on the drive immediately following Cole DeLattre's pass being picked off by Allegany's Sebastian Stewart.
Allegany coach Bryan Hansel: "I think our guys played hard -- that I will say. That's the one positive I took from this game for them. I think there's things, we talked about that war of attrition was going to come -- this is their (Hollidaysburg) third game and they are in game shape. .. We knew in the second half if we didn't keep it within a strike, it was going to be tough for us."
Records: Hollidaysburg (3-0); Allegany, Md. (0-1).
Next week: Hollidaysburg travels to Butler next Friday; Allegany, Md. is on the road at Frankfort, W.Va. the same night.
