FLINTON -- Although Glendale fell to 1-5 on Friday evening with a 34-27 loss to Mount Union at Dr. Roy F. Baker Athletic Field, there were a lot of positives that the Vikings can take into the final four weeks of the regular season.
The Vikings gave the Trojans (5-1) a battle for four quarters in their closest win of the season. Ultimately, it was the talents of Mount Union quarterback Nasir Collins, with his arm and his legs, that was the deciding factor.
Collins ran for four touchdowns on 28 carries for 157 yards on the ground. Through the air, the junior went 10-for-21 with 158 yards and a passing touchdown to Tyjier Hooper.
"I think he's the best athlete we're going to play all year," Glendale coach Chase Hill said. "We knew if one person was going to beat us, it's going to be him. He's legit. He's as advertised."
Play of the game: Collins' fourth TD on the ground, from 9 yards out, gave Mount Union a 34-20 lead with 5:19 left to seal the game.
Player of the game: Collins, who is primarily a running back that is now playing quarterback due to so many injuries for Mount Union, ran for 157 yards and threw for 158 yards.
Unsung heroes: The Glendale offense deserves a lot of credit for clawing its way back into the game in the first half. The Vikings were down 13-0 with 7:11 left in the first half, but scored 20 points in the final 5:04 of the first half to tie the game at 20 at halftime.
Most vital statistics: Out of Mount Union's 346 yards of total offense, Collins accounted for 315 of them.
Mount Union coach Jamie Brumbaugh: "(Glendale) is a tough football team. The losses that they have are to very, very good football teams. We knew that coming here. That team outsized us immensely."
Hill: "We played well, going down two scores early and we fought back. They rose up to the occasion. They wanted to win that game, and even in the second half, we were down two scores with five minutes to go, and they fought back and had a heck of a drive."
Glendale quarterback Logan Skebeck, who threw for 212 yards in the game: "They're a very good team. I know they're a little short on kids, but they're still a very good team. I thought we played all four quarters the best we could against a really good team."
Notable: Skebeck had a hand in all four of Glendale's touchdowns for the night, two through the run game and two more through the pass. He hit Tanner Ammerman for a 46-yard TD pass to get his team on the board, and also found Ammerman again with 19 seconds left in the first half on fourth down. ... Hooper also had an interception for the Trojans. ... Out of Glendale's five losses, Friday was the third by seven points or less.
Records: Mount Union (5-1); Glendale (1-5).
Next week: Mount Union hosts Juniata Valley, while Glendale entertains Claysburg-Kimmel.
