FLINTON -- The start of the Glendale football season has been tough on the Vikings for a variety of reasons.
In the last two weeks alone, they have lost by one possession each game, totaling a combined six points.
Friday night, the Vikings got a touchdown on the opening drive on a pass from Logan Skebeck to Cam Dreibelbis and never looked back as they smacked Southern Huntingdon, 33-0, setting off a joyous homecoming celebration at Dr. Roy F. Baker Athletic Field.
It was also the first victory for first year head coach Chase Hill.
"It's about time," Hill said. "They played so good, so good. Most teams when they start 0-4 would fold. These guys dug deeper and put in the work. This is a good team, they know they're a good team. They just came out and did what they're supposed to do."
Sequence of the game: The Rockets had appeared to answer the Vikings' initial score with a kickoff return for a touchdown. However, they were called for sideline interference which negated the score. The Vikings ended the Rockets best chance to score with a
fourth-down stop setting them up for a 12-play, 95-yard drive capped off by Gage Myers touchdown.
Players of the game: Myers led the way with 123 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns for the Vikings. QB Logan Skebeck completed 19-of-24 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns to Dreibelbis, who recorded eight catches for 75 yards
and two scores.
Unsung heroes: Both the offensive and defensive lines for the Vikings.
Most vital statistics: Glendale's defense dominated from the start allowing just
47 yards of total offense -- giving up minus-5 yards in the first half alone. The offense meanwhile put up a staggering 409 yards of total offense.
Hill on Myers and Skebeck: "(Myers) ran hard, he ran real good. The line, this was the best game they had all year. Logan had the best game of his career yet. I was happy with it, I really was.''
Southern Huntingdon coach Fred Foster: "We didn't stop them. They executed well. We couldn't stop them. We got outcoached tonight. We're just preparing for battle and doing the best we can.''
Myers: "Everybody was on point tonight. The line was making holes as big as trucks. We just fired out on all cylinders. Every week we've been adding up to it and finally went out and played (and won).''
Notable: Glendale recorded 22 first downs for the game -- 15 in the first half alone -- to the Rockets three. ... Southern Huntingdon recorded one first down in the half which came on a Viking penalty. ... The Vikings never punted and blocked one Rocket punt attempt. ... Connor Oshall scored two field goals, one from 24 and 37 yards apiece.
