NEW PARIS -- Chestnut Ridge dealt with a lot of penalty trouble during the first half, being called for seven of them for 45 yards and five of them coming in a stretch of 10 plays.
The bad news for Central Cambria is that the Red Devils weren't able to make the Lions pay for their infractions.
Chestnut Ridge's defense proved to be too much once again as the Lions shut out the Red Devils, 27-0, Friday night in Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference action at Dr. Giovacchini Stadium.
"They've been the stalwart all year," Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker said.
While the Red Devils were able to force the Lions to settle for two field goals in the second quarter, it was a special teams miscue that ended up costing them.
Play of the game: Chestnut Ridge's Garrett Weyandt returned a punt 87 yards for a score just more than two minutes into the second half to give Chestnut Ridge a 20-0 lead.
Player of the game: Lions fullback Jayden Imler racked up 131 yards on the ground on 22 carries with one touchdown.
Unsung heroes: The Lions defense, which held an opponent to less than 10 points for the third time this season. Chestnut Ridge is 3-0 when the defense accomplishes this feat.
Most vital statistics: Chestnut Ridge racked up 21 first downs and held Central Cambria to seven as a team.
Shoemaker on the stretch run at the beginning: "We realize we have to get some wins under our belt, and tonight we were able to execute. Overall, I think the guys have really improved from the start of the season until where we are at right now. We've been doing a pretty good job on both sides of our line controlling the line of scrimmage. I'm pleased with where we're at. We just need to clean up the controllables.''
Central Cambria coach Wade Klezek: "Too many missed tackles. There's a lot of plays where they're behind the sticks, and we come up and we're hitting them at the line of scrimmage and they break a tackle or two and next thing it's plus-13. Credit their guys for making those plays. We know we have to be better in that regard.''
Shoemaker on Imler: "Jayden's a very hard runner; he breaks a lot of tackles. He refuses to go down and keeps his legs driving -- just a bulldog type of fullback.''
Notable: Chestnut Ridge recorded 13 of its first downs in the first have to just one for Central Cambria. ... The Lions defense held the Red Devils to two completed pass attempts, which accounted for minus-1 yard. ... Central Cambria averaged yards more per carry (5.7 yards) than Chestnut Ridge (5 yards). ... The Lions finished with 11 penalties for 85 yards while the Red Devils were called for five for 30 yards.
