H.S. football extra

JOHNSTOWN — A plethora of splash plays in the early going of Friday night’s Heritage Conference contest at Conemaugh Valley allowed Cambria Heights to take command and put the game well in hand before halftime.

The Highlanders struck for five scoring plays of over 50 yards, and forced four first-half turnovers en route to a dominant 58-6 triumph over the Blue Jays.

Play of the game: With Cambria Heights leading 7-0, Conemaugh Valley quarterback Xzavior Tatum completed three straight passes for 54 yards to move the Blue Jays into the red zone for a potential tying score.

However, Cambria Heights’ Brayden DeArmitt then picked off a pass at the goal line and returned it to the Highlander 15. On the next play, Highlander quarterback Kaiden Ivory connected with Bryce Lewis on a short toss over the middle that Lewis turned into an 85-yard touchdown.

Player of the game: DeArmitt ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns on his only two carries of the game, while intercepting two passes on defense and catching a two-point conversion pass.

Unsung heroes: Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis credited his starting offensive line of Jack Sherwood, Justin Galinis, Hayden Leamer, James Holtz, and Nathan Wood for an outstanding job of blocking that enabled the Highlander offense to execute both running and passing.

Most vital statistic: Cambria Heights erupted for 447 yards of total offense on just 24 offensive plays, as nine Highlander ball carriers combined for 349 rushing yards.

Coach Lewis: “We came out, got a defensive stop, had a few good drives, and got some turnovers. The boys played well, played hard, and kept it rolling. We want to continue to get better, and we did a lot of good things tonight.”

Conemaugh Valley coach Joel Holsopple: “We just have to get ready for next week.”

DeArmitt: “On those two picks, I saw the ball in the air and just went for it. On those two touchdowns, they went to me and I was able to use my speed.”

Notable: Camden Gray rushed for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just four carries for the Highlanders.

Records: Cambria Heights (5-1), Conemaugh Valley (0-6).

Next week: Cambria Heights hosts Portage while Conemaugh Valley travels to Homer-Center.
