Bedford football picks up special win on the road at Central Cambria

EBENSBURG — It’s not every week that a football game comes down to a set of special teams plays.
During Friday night’s Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference contest between Central Cambria and Bedford there were three punts that placed inside the 20 — two of over 50 yards — a missed extra point and kickoff return for a touchdown.
The bad news for the Red Devils is that they were on the receiving end of the bad news as the Bisons survived the defensive affair, 14-13, at Central Cambria Stadium.
“We like to pride ourselves on special teams,” Central Cambria coach Wade Klezek said. “Credit to their guys, too, they made some good plays tonight. We have to get better there because that’s a huge phase of the game, especially in close games.”
Plays of the game: Central Cambria’s special teams miscues and the two Bedford punts which pinned the Red Devils inside their 20 in the first half along with another 50-yard punt during the fourth quarter from Ethan Yokum.

Player of the game: Livengood whose two touchdowns amounted to a total of 134 total yards.
Unsung heroes: Yokum for controlling the field position game for the Bisons along with Bedford defense.
Most vital statistics: Bedford held the Red Devils to 13 points while allowing 315 yards of total offense and 13 first downs.
A valiant effort: The special teams mistakes spoiled a tremendous night from Ryan Chappell who recorded an impressive 246 yards on 29 carries including two carries that went for 50 yards or more.
Bedford coach Kevin Steele: “Credit to our special teams. Ethan (Yokum) had some big plays punting, Grey (Livengood)’s kickoff return was huge and then the big pass play as well. We certainly have lots of things to work on, but it’s a lot easier to work on those things after a win than a loss.”
Klezek: “It’s tough, especially when these kids played so hard. Way too many little mistakes that add up over the course of a game. Momentum on offense, but we’d have a penalty. Score a touchdown, but then we give up the kick return. Little things that if we can sure up, hopefully that can change that gut punch kind of feeling. They’re always a very tough team, they always play aggressive, and they’re always well coached. If you give a tough, aggressive team that’s well coached too many chances, they’ll make you pay for it.”
Bedford’s Grey Livengood: “We rep special teams every practice and I think we finally figured it out and realized that special teams is not just a play off. You have to play special teams to win games.”
Steele on offensive struggles: “I’m not a mathematical expert, but the odds of winning a game without a first down in a half is not very high. Credit to our kids for battling. It wasn’t pretty at times for sure, but we found a way to make it happen.”
Notable: Central Cambria outgained Bedford, 109-15, in the first half and held the Bisons without a first down. … The Bisons finished with a total of 117 yards in total offense. … Penalties also proved to be problematic for the Red Devils as they were hit with eight flags for 75 yards while Bedford committed two for 25 yards.
Records: Bedford (1-2), Central Cambria (1-2).
Next week: Bedford travels to Penn Cambria while Central Cambria will host Johnstown next Friday. Penn Cambria is coming off a loss against Forest Hills while Johnstown is coming off a loss to Somerset.
