SOMERSET-- Penn Cambria shrugged off two early deficits by posting 42 unanswered points on the way to a commanding 50-10 win over Somerset in a Week 1 Laurel Highlands Conference matchup.
Play of the game: After Somerset took a 10-8 lead on a 28-yard field goal late in the opening quarter, senior wide receiver Blake Lilly fielded the ensuing kickoff before finding a seam and racing past multiple defenders for a 95-yard touchdown that gave Penn Cambria a lead it would not relinquish.
Player of the game: Lilly totaled 311 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, all of it coming in the first half. He scored a 59-yard rushing touchdown and also had a pair of receiving touchdowns.
Unsung hero: While most of the attention was squarely on Lilly, senior quarterback Brady Jones was efficient with his opportunities, going 5-for-9 for 159 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Jones also added eight carries for 52 yards on the ground.
Most vital statistic: Penn Cambria racked up 251 yards of offense in the second quarter, which helped translate to a 37-10 advantage at halftime.
Penn Cambria coach Jason Grassi on Lilly's playmaking ability: "He's electric. It's the kicking game, it's defensively and it's offensively. The kid's a player, and we knew that coming into this. He was a guy that we obviously wanted to get the football to and get it in his hands in different ways. He showed it tonight by scoring in every way you can think of."
Somerset coach Jeff Urban on what changed after the opening quarter: "The team we played is too good to make small mistakes against. When we were executing at a high level, we were hanging and banging with them. But our youth caught up to us, and we made a couple mistakes."
Notable: Corbin Vinglish rushed 10 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. ... Ian Beck punched in a 2-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left in the third quarter that set the running clock in motion for the duration of the fourth.
An oddity: Penn Cambria beat Somerset 40-0 in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A playoffs last season at Forest Hills High School. This season began with another 40-point win over Somerset, this time on the Golden Eagles' home turf.
Records: Penn Cambria (1-0), Somerset (0-1)
Next week: Penn Cambria entertains Bald Eagle Area in its home opener. Somerset visits Huntingdon.
