MEYERSDALE -- There is an old saying defense wins championships, and if that holds true the Meyersdale Red Raiders are looking good after six interceptions and one fumble recovery on the night proved to be too much for the Glendale Vikings to overcome.
Meyersdale used a balanced offensive attack with nine different ball carriers in the 44-16 victory.
Play of the game: Just after an opening drive touchdown by Meyersdale, the Red Raiders' Gavin Steinberg picked off a Glendale pass and returned it 40 yards for the touchdown to give Meyersdale a 14-0 lead just over two minutes into the game.
Player of the game: Meyersdale quarterback Lance Jones threw for 111 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 50 more yards on the ground, and intercepted two fourth quarter passes to seal the victory.
Unsung hero: Meyersdale's Caden Snyder scored on both his carries from 11 and 25 yards away, but it was his opening drive 54-yard reception that created the early momentum for the home team.
Most vital statistic: Nine Red Raiders carried the ball for 297 combined yards on 40 carries for over a 7-yard average per carry to highlight the balance the Red Raiders are hoping for.
Glendale coach Chase Hill: "Two games in a row were we just played sloppy and killed ourselves with penalties in the first quarter. We lost two games to out-of-(division) opponents, but we get to go home next week and hopefully put on a show and quit getting behind the eight-ball early."
Meyersdale coach Ryan Donaldson: "You could not ask for a better start. We scored on our first possession and then the pick-6 was huge for the momentum in the rest of the game."
Meyersdale quarterback Jones: "We have a theme of the weeks, and our theme this week was composure. We did not get too high or too low, but our defensive line forced pressure, and everyone chipped in, and it paid off. Coach Schrock had a great game plan mixing up the coverages."
Notable: Glendale punter Connor Oshall punted twice for a 37-yard average. … After cutting it to 31-16 in the second quarter a surprise onside kick was recovered by the Vikings. However, on the next play, an interception gave the ball, and momentum back to Meyersdale.
Records: Glendale (0-2), Meyersdale (2-0).
Next week: Glendale hosts Juniata Valley. Meyersdale hosts North Star.
