WINDBER -- A sloppy start doomed Glendale from the start of the game as the Windber defense proved to be too much Friday night in a 38-20 Ramblers' win to open the season in Inter-County Conference action at Windber Stadium.
The Viking offense managed to get 14 points off of their takeaways before the Rambler offense found its footing.
"Penalties, turnovers, stuff that loses games is stuff that you can fix easily," Glendale coach Chase Hill said of his team's mistakes. "We had a touchdown called back on a block in the back (on a fumble recovery in the third quarter). Staying disciplined, we just didn't do that tonight."
Play of the game: Windber's Nokosi Fowler-Whetstone 79-yard run following a Glendale touchdown which helped pull the Vikings within four put the game away for the Ramblers.
Player of the game: Rambler DB Ike Serenko came up with two key pass break ups in the fourth quarter and two interceptions for the evening.
Unsung heroes: The Rambler defense who helped offset seven Rambler fumbles -- five lost -- and an interception.
Take it away: Along with the six turnovers that the Ramblers gave up, the Vikings had their own turnover problems as they gave up the ball four times.
Windber coach Matt Grohal: "We showed our youthfulness tonight, we showed our inexperience. I know that was a really good football team coming in here. I said to the guys all week that if we don't turn the ball over, I think we can put ourselves in a position to win. Good teams find a way to overcome turnovers. Credit to those guys. That's a veteran ball club. They hung in there and overcome our mistakes and their mistakes and made it a heck of a football game in the fourth quarter.''
Hill: "It was a sloppy first half. We had a pick-6, other than that it would've been a tie game at the half. Second half I thought we did a good job battling back. Scoring, recovering that onside kick was awesome. We let that big one break and then that big one break deflates you.''
Notable: Windber celebrated their senior night ahead of the game. ... Both teams had a combined nine first downs with the Ramblers record six of them in the first half. ... Rambler QB Ace Kolson completed 67 percent of his passes. ... Glendale was called for four penalties for 40 yards while Windber was hit with eight infractions for 80 yards.
