Berlin wins turnover battle to topple C-K
CLAYSBURG — Claysburg-Kimmel and Berlin Brothersvalley put up similar stats Friday night, except in one big category.
Each team had 12 first downs, and Berlin gained just one more yard than the Bulldogs, 227-226.
The Mountaineers won the turnover battle, however, 4-0, leading to a 35-7 win on opening night at Bulldog Stadium.
Claysburg coach Chuck Kassick: “They’re physical. They’re disciplined. They have their game. They don’t go crazy. Here’s what we do, and they do it pretty darn well. They didn’t make the mistakes we made and that definitely cost us.”
“We cannot turn the ball over like that. We’ve got to take better care of the ball and do better up front. We’re going to get back at it this week, correct these things, and see how we do next week.”
Series of the game: Trailing 14-0 with time running down in the first half, the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard when Mason Campagna found Jacob Herline open downfield for a 42-yard score, making it a 14-7 game at the break.
Claysburg then got a three-and-out to start the second half when Remington Diehl sacked Berlin QB Brady Janidlo for a 10-yard loss on third down.
The momentum lasted just one play, though. Corbin Kordell’s interception and 30-yard return for a touchdown put Berlin back up by two scores, and Claysburg never really recovered.
Berlin Brothersvalley players of the game: In addition to the pick six, Kordell also scored on offense with a 20-yard catch and run. Carter Durst had 67 yards and a short touchdown run on 14 carries before leaving the game in the third quarter with severe cramping. His backup, Seth Kimmel, finished off Claysburg with 97 yards rushing and two scores on 10 carries.
Claysburg-Kimmel player of the game: Diehl had two sacks and a tackle for loss on defense plus three catches for 41 yards on offense.
Most vital statistic: Berlin won the turnover margin 4-0 with three interceptions and a fumble recovery on special teams.
Berlin coach Dante Paul: “Everybody calls ’em turnovers. We like to call ’em takeaways. We take pride in taking the ball away from the offense, and we protect the ball on offense. A lot of times when you win the turnover battle, good things happen, and we definitely capitalized on that (Friday).”
Unsung heroes: The trainers for both teams had to deal with multiple players cramping throughout the game, some unable to move off the field until after several minutes of stretching.
Notable: Claysburg’s Trevor Brown was ejected for a flagrant helmet-to-helmet hit while blocking on a punt return early in the fourth quarter and will be ineligible to play next week.
Records: Berlin (1-0); Claysburg (0-1).
Next week: Berlin hosts Mount Union. Claysburg visits Northern Bedford.
