It was the Hamilton Gates show as Bishop Guilfoyle trounced Juniata Valley, 49-0, in the District 6 1A quarterfinals at Mansion Park Friday night.

Gates and his fellow Marauders felt like they had something to prove after falling short in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championship game last week.

They certainly did that and then some with Gates scoring four first-half touchdowns.

"We talked about it all week, we feel like we got a lot to prove," Bishop Guilfoyle coach Justin Wheeler said. "We're back in Single-A, and we want to make a long run. The way it ended last week, we don't want to leave it up to anyone else. We want to make sure that we leave no doubt."

If there were any doubts about the Marauders, Gates and company dispatched them much like they dispatched the Green Hornets with ease.

Gates had two touchdowns on the ground in the first quarter to get the scoring started for Guilfoyle, then hauled in two touchdown passes in the second quarter to help the Marauders to a 28-0 first half lead.

"It's honestly just great game planning by our coaches," Gates said. "They always put us in the right positions, and everyone around is always just doing their job. And it just opens up for me."

Gates made life miserable at times for Juniata Valley and coach Bill Musser.

"We tried to slow him down," Musser said. "You try to make him uncomfortable from time to time, try to make him earn everything. I thought the young man did a great job of earning everything he got tonight."

The senior receiver finished with 151 yards on nine receptions while adding 59 yards on the ground.

Chase Kissell chipped in 283 yards and three touchdowns through the air with his final touchdown, a 6-yard pass going to Braden Reilly in the third quarter to hit the mercy rule.

Senior running back Taurean Consiglio and freshman quarterback Justin Wheeler each added a fourth quarter touchdown to round out the scoring.

The Marauders move on to face Claysburg-Kimmel in the District 6 1A semifinals next week, tentatively set for Hollidaysburg's Tiger Stadium.

Play of the game: Gates hauled in a Kissell pass on the first play of the game for 26 yards as he cut through the Juniata Valley defense and the Marauders never looked back.

Player of the game: Gates.

Unsung hero: Consiglio averaged 9.6 yards per carry and finished with 96 yards and a touchdown.

Most vital statistic: Bishop Guilfoyle held Juniata Valley to a total of 56 yards of offense.

Coach Wheeler: "Our defense has been pretty good most of the year, and in spurts they've been really good. We got some good speed, and we got some guys that have played a lot of football, but our front guys -- I know Juniata Valley has run the ball really well the last three weeks, and we thought our front seven really did a nice job today."

Musser: "They're obviously a good team, a well-coached team. I thought we came out and fought tonight. I didn't think we stepped back and allowed things to come to us. We made some things happen, and they made a couple more things happen.''

Notable: Guilfoyle did not punt … JV crossed midfield once courtesy of a 15-yard facemask.

Records: Bishop Guilfoyle (10-1), Juniata Valley (4-7).

Next week: Bishop Guilfoyle vs. Claysburg-Kimmel; Juniata Valley finished.
