Bulldogs beat Vikes again, move into semifinal round

FLINTON -- When Claysburg-Kimmel and Glendale played each other during the regular season, the Bulldogs routed the Vikings, 47-0.

When they played again in a District 6 Class 1A quarterfinal game on a chilly Friday night at Dr. Roy F. Baker Field, it was much more competitive.

Almost every time the fifth-seeded Bulldogs scored a touchdown or kicked a field goal, the fourth-seeded Vikings responded with a touchdown. But the Bulldogs had one more touchdown, including two by Mark Lattieri, who was recovering from an injury, to beat the Vikings, 32-22.

"I'm proud of the effort," Glendale coach Dave "Spank" Trexler said after an emotional meeting with his seniors. "The kids came in with the mindset they wanted to win this game, and they put the effort in. They put themselves in this position and we came up short. I feel for them right now. I know how it hurts in these situations. But the sun will come up tomorrow and things will make sense."

"The difference was they didn't turn the ball over as much," Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick said. "That first time we played them, everything went right for us. The fact of the matter is they're a playoff team, and we knew we'd come up here and it would be a tough game. They played hard. Coach Spank gets those kids ready."

The Bulldogs improved to 7-4 and will play at top-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle next week.

Play of the game: With time running out in the first half and the Bulldogs leading 9-7 and facing a third-and-15 at the Glendale 23, C-K quarterback Mason Campagna completed a pass to Remington Diehl short of the end zone.

But Diehl carried defenders toward the end zone and got help from teammates, who pushed the pile and Diehl in for a touchdown with 1.6 seconds left in the half.

"We talked about that at halftime," Kassick said. "Those are things you watch on television usually. If you're the team pushing the guy in you're sitting there cheering and pumping your arms. I kept thinking don't blow (the play) dead. What a great effort from our kids pushing him in."

Player of the game: Campagna ran for 143 yards on 23 carries and scored on a 32-yard run. He completed 5 of 13 passes for 134 yards and a TD and was intercepted once.

"He had a good night," Kassick said. "He got big runs for us and threw a couple real good passes."

Gutsy effort: The banged-up Lattieri ran for 95 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 17 and 14 yards.

"We weren't sure if Lattieri was going to play," Kassick said. "He gutted it out because he was hurt last week. He played his tail off and our kids blocked hard. The difference in the game was the ability to run the football."

"That's as good of a 1-2 punch around," Trexler said. "We knew Lattieri had some health issues last week, but we expected him to play and he did some things.

Unsung heroes:  The Bulldogs' offensive line opened holes in a 249-yard rushing attack.

Most vital statistic: The Bulldogs intercepted Logan Skebeck twice -- once by Landon Woods and once by Jacob Herline. They also recovered two fumbles.  

"When you look at the film, I'm sure it's going to show turnovers and penalties were really our Achilles heel," Trexler said.

Kicking it: C-K's Nathan Fee kicked field goals of 23 and 30 yards.

Next week: Claysburg-Kimmel visits Bishop Guilfoyle in the semifinals. Glendale is done.
