WINDBER -- Bedford coach Kevin Steele said Friday night's contest against Berlin Brothersvalley was the most complete game his team has played all year, and the Bisons saved it for the biggest stage.
The Bisons shut down the powerful Mountaineers' rush offense and received a three-touchdown performance from quarterback Quincy Swaim in an 18-0 victory at Windber Stadium, giving Bedford the District 5 Class 2A crown.
"I'm very proud of the kids," Steele said. "They worked very hard so hard in the offseason, starting out in the summer. There wasn't a single person outside our locker room that thought we were going to win a district title.
"They battled, they fought, and they persevered. They got better over the course of the season and gained confidence in themselves. I've been coaching a long time, and this is right up there with one of the most special teams I've had."
Bedford claimed its first district championship since winning the Class 3A title in 2021.
Friday's victory proved to be even more special for top-seeded Bedford after winning just three games during the 2023 season.
The Bisons have now been victorious in six of their last seven games and improved to 9-3 overall.
"Last year left a bad taste in our mouths," said Swaim, who rushed for 261 yards on 36 carries. "We weren't really a team then, and we didn't stick together. This year, though, since heat acclimation, we've been a unit. That's why we're winning and being successful right now."
Player of the game: Swaim tallied a touchdown in each of the final three quarters in the contest. The senior gave Bedford a 6-0 lead with a 2-yard touchdown run at 6:20 of the second, which stuck until the half.
Swaim then added a 61-yard score in the third and a 4-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter to set the final.
"It's all a credit to the line," Swaim said. "They made the holes and gave us opportunities to move the ball. They're down in the trenches doing the dirty work, and they deserve this win."
Most vital statistic: Defense was prominent for the Bisons, as they recorded their second shutout of the season while holding the Mountaineers to just three first downs and 94 total yards.
Berlin Brothers-valley's farthest drive into Bedford territory came on a muffed punt, where the Mountaineers reached the Bisons' 34. AJ Koontz recorded an interception two plays later.
"We just couldn't get anything going offensively," Berlin Brothersvalley coach Doug Paul said. "It was a credit to them. They fly around, they're aggressive, and we knew that. We just couldn't get anything established. A couple guys got hurt and we had to move guys around, and it wasn't too good of a recipe. The guys battled, though, and I'm proud of them."
Notable: The loss also marked the end of Paul's 23-year run as the Mountaineers' head coach. Berlin Brothersvalley won four district championships under Paul and reached the PIAA semifinals in 2015.
"It took a lot of heart to get to where we are now from where we were in the middle of the season," Paul said. "We gained an identity. I'm super-proud of these young men. They've got nothing to hang their heads about."

Next week: Berlin Brothersvalley's season has concluded; Bedford will face District 3 champion Steelton-Highspire in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A state playoffs.
