DuBOIS -- Hollidaysburg's goal going into Friday night's game against DuBois at E.J. Mansell Stadium was to win and finish the regular season with a 9-1 record for the third time in program history.
The Golden Tigers accomplished that mission on a beautiful night.
Quarterback Maddox Bainey threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another while Mitchell Baronner ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns en route to a 49-28 win.
"It's a great season for us so far," Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre said. "We have high goals. We have a home game (against Allderdice) in the postseason, and then we have a very tough subregional with DuBois or Cathedral Prep.
"These guys took their lumps. They were 2-8 as sophomores, with most of them playing as sophomores quite a bit. Last year, we were 5-6. They kept playing hard, kept believing in each other, kept working hard and believing in the coaches. They were rewarded with a great season."
The Golden Tigers kept the Beavers' passing game in check. DuBois quarterback Trey Wingard completed 26 of 41 passes for only 195 yards, or 7.5 yards per pass, two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for a touchdown. DuBois had 75 total plays for 363 yards.
"They had a good game plan," DeLattre said. "They have some really talented receivers. Our defense was a bend-but-not-break defense in a couple situations. The two turnovers were really critical."
Play of the game: After DuBois used 12 plays to go 55 yards and scored on a Wingard 1-yard sneak on fourth down in the first quarter, Bainey connected with Cole DeLattre for an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the ensuing series.
"It was a really big momentum shifter early in the game," Bainey said.
Player of the game: Bainey completed 8 of his 14 passes and connected on 4 of 5 passes in the second half. Bainey threw a 14-yard TD pass to Brady Steiner. He also ran for 21 yards on 10 carries and scored on a 2-yard run.
"Maddox played well," Coach DeLattre said. "He was able to make some plays with his feet as well. We mixed the quarterback run in."
"It went well," Bainey said. "Having a good running game allowed us to open up in the passing game."
Big first half: Baronner ran for 151 of his 161 yards in the first half on only 10 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run. He also had a 10-yard TD run.
"He ran well," DeLattre said. "They gave us a light box, just a five-man front. They were playing an umbrella over top. He made some nice cuts and the line got some good push. He's been running hard all year long, and he's deserving of a big night."
Unsung heroes: The Hollidaysburg offensive line opened up holes and protected Bainey.
Homer DeLattre on the game: "That was a great game. They have some really good players and a great offense. We got the benefit of a fumble and we made a nice play in the red zone. Those two plays really changed the game for us."
Next week: Hollidaysburg hosts Allderdice in a Class 5A subregional game. DuBois visits Cathedral Prep in the subregional.
Records: Hollidaysburg (9-1), DuBois (7-3).
