HUNTINGDON -- Having suffered three tight losses in its last four games, Tyrone really needed a win over winless Huntingdon on Friday night at War Vets Field.
The Golden Eagles, who had last won in overtime against Bald Eagle Area on Sept. 13, got that victory after overcoming some early sloppiness in a 32-7 win on Huntingdon's homecoming night.
After both teams combined for two lost fumbles, two interceptions and a blocked field goal in the first quarter, Tyrone quarterback Ashton Walk and receivers Trent Adams and Eli Woomer took command of the game.
Walk threw touchdown passes to Adams and Woomer, ran for two touchdowns and completed two passes to Woomer and another to Adams on two-point conversions. The Golden Eagles defense finished with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
"Every game went down to the wire," Tyrone coach John Franco said of the previous four games. "Central goes down to the wire. Bald Eagle goes down to the wire. Bellwood goes down to the wire. BG really went down to the wire until they did the pick-6. If they don't do the pick-6 and we score it's a tie game. But you know what, those games are a lot of fun."
Play of the game: It wasn't a touchdown, but a 23-yard pass from Walk to Woomer in the third quarter set up the last score. Walk dropped back, began scrambling left, came back the other way, cut inside of a defender and threw a dart to Woomer, who did a toe-tap catch on the sideline for the completion.
"Eli is a playmaker, there's no doubt about it," Franco said. "I think he thrives for that moment. No matter what sport it is, he wants that big moment. They really work on that (scramble drill) really well."
Player of the game: After a slow start, Walk completed 14 of 20 passes for 283 yards and a score passes of 54 yards to Adams and 3 yards to Woomer. He ran for touchdowns of 19 yards and 1 yard. "He found the open receivers," Franco said. "They have some tough coverages. It was tough to cover us because we have several guys we can go to. Our line has been doing a great job with protection the last couple weeks."
"You're darned if you do and you're darned if you don't," Huntingdon coach Tim Lucko said. "If you pressure the kid, he can run. He's very good at keeping his eyes downfield when he's scrambling."
Unsung heroes: The Tyrone defensive line, led by senior Cian Hockenberry, gave up only 85 yards rushing and rushed and harassed Huntingdon quarterback Eric Mykut, who had a TD pass, most of the night.
Most vital statistics: Adams caught three passes for 122 yards, while Woomer hauled in five passes for 96 yards.
Notable: Tyrone had interceptions by Woomer, Logan Rumberger and Klayten Moore. ... Woomer blocked a field goal and returned it to the Tyrone 19. ... Tyrone's Ashton Emigh and Marshall Martin had fumble recoveries.
Next week: Tyrone hosts Central Cambria while Huntingdon will play host to Forest Hills.
Records: Tyrone (3-4), Huntingdon (0-7)
