FLINTON -- Glendale and Curwensville went back and forth Friday night with the Vikings scoring 14 in the first quarter and the Golden Tide answering with 14 in the third quarter.
After Curwensville quarterback Tyler Dunn raced 51 yards to even the score with 7:15 remaining in the third quarter, the Golden Tide had all the momentum. Up to that point, the Glendale offense had gained just 60 yards.
The Vikings offense came to life at the right time, however, putting together a 10-play, 60-yard drive all on the ground to reclaim the lead. Jimmy Sutton capped the pivotal drive with a 7-yard touchdown run, and Glendale held on for a 21-14 win on senior night at Dr. Roy F. Baker Field.
Glendale coach Spank Trexler: "We made some big errors. We had one on the second half kickoff, dropped a pass early, had some penalties, a bad snap on a punt. Unforced errors that are just biting us. The positive is we battled back and found a way."
Player of the game: Sutton ran the ball 15 times for 139 yards, 82 of which came on the final two drives. Along with his 7-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, the senior back also scored on a 24-yard run late in the first quarter to put Glendale up 14-0.
Plays of the game: In the opening minute of the game, Curwensville tried to throw a short pass to the wide side of the field. Cameron Dreibelbis read the play, however, broke in front of the receiver and raced 29 yards untouched to the end zone for the pick-6.
"I was watching film all week, and I knew he was going to throw the ball right there,'' Dreibelbis said. "I just made a play on it. I read it perfectly."
QB Logan Skebeck broke off a pair of nice 13-yard runs on the game-winning drive prior to Sutton's touchdown run before Sutton iced the game with a pair of long runs on the final drive.
The first went for 24 yards where he broke the line of scrimmage and appeared to be stopped, but he kept his legs churning and moved the pile for another 15 yards.
"The hole was good. I got stood up by the safety. Kept my legs driving, and everybody hopped on for the ride," Sutton said.
Sutton could have had his third touchdown of the night when he broke free in the final two minutes of the game, but the senior back slid down at the Curwensville 7, allowing Glendale to take a knee twice and kill the clock.
Special teams snafus: Glendale had a snap sail way over the punter's head in the first quarter for a 27-yard loss, turning the ball over to Curwensville at their own 26. The Vikings got the ball back on a Skebeck interception in the end zone that he returned out to the 45.
The second one was more costly.
Glendale was set to open the second half with the ball, but the kickoff was well-placed along the sideline over the up men and well in front of the deep returners. Curwensville's Tuck Tkacik pounced on the live ball at the Glendale 28.
Six plays later, Andrew Pentz scored on a 2-yard run to get the Golden Tide on the board before Dunn's long run on the ensuing possession tied the game.
Curwensville coach Jim Thompson: "We talked about being able to respond. Similar things happened against Juniata Valley last week. We had a couple rough plays early. We let it snowball and got our butts kicked. We were in the same situation here, down 14 and our kids stood up and fought back."
Unsung heroes: Glendale gained most of its yardage running right at Curwensville behind center Devin Kaufman and guards Landen McGarvey and Mason Brink.
Trexler: "It was that type of night where we needed to play physical and put it on the line. The did some things on the edges to control our passing game. The run was there, and the line really controlled it up front."
