PHILIPSBURG -- Philipsburg-Osceola quarterback Archer Baughman connected with senior Sammy McDonald for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 2:04 left in the first half of the game against unbeaten Bishop Guilfoyle.
Momentum seemed to be on P-O's side Friday night, but with BG's explosive offense, momentum can be fleeting for opposing teams.
The Marauders, up by 13 points, bolted 66 yards on six plays and reached the end zone on a Hamilton Gates 6-yard run with 31.1 seconds remaining. BG erupted for 21 points in the third quarter of senior night at Mountaineer Stadium to win, 49-14.
"I thought we played pretty well," BG coach Justin Wheeler said. "I thought we missed a couple early on. We had some opportunities to get things rolling a little faster."
"In the second half, I wasn't happy with how our kids responded," P-O coach Jeff Vroman said. "When it was 20-7, I was disappointed in the fact that we didn't hold them. That really hurt us when they scored to make it 28-7 at the half. But hats off to them. They blocked us up front."
The Marauders improved to 9-0 and will play at 9-0 Penn Cambria next week in a Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championship clash.
The Marauders finished with a 403 total yards -- 235 yards rushing and 168 yards passing. Chase Kissell completed 14 of 18 passes for 168 yards two touchdowns to his brother Jake Kissell, while running back Taurean Consiglio ran for 100 yards on 10 carries and scored on runs of 20 and 36 yards.
Play of the game: After the P-O defense held BG on fourth down on the first series of the game, BG's Nick McCloskey recovered a Colton Chapman fumble and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown.
"He's been unbelievable all year," Wheeler said. "He just does everything for us."
Player of the game: Chase Kissell had lots of time to throw, and he nearly completed two passes in the first quarter that would have pushed him to near the 200-yard mark. He also ran for an 11-yard score and had 56 yards on three carries.
He threw a 31-yard TD pass and a 20-yard TD pass to tight end Jake Kissell.
"They were trying to double team some of our other guys," Wheeler said. "So when you do that, you leave some other guys one on one in some good situations. Our quarterback made some good reads and those guys made some good connections."
Unsung heroes: The BG offensive line protected Chase Kissell and opened up holes for the running attack.
Blocked punt: BG's Rocco Cacciotti blocked a Robert McClenahan punt. On the next play, Chase Kissell threw his second TD pass to his brother.
Onside kick: After the second TD pass to Jake Kissell, BG attempted an onside kick and recovered it. Consiglio responded with a tackle-breaking 36-yard run for a touchdown.
"There was some stuff going on with the kickoff," Wheeler said, "and we didn't want to get anyone hurt. So we just wanted to make sure we either got the ball back or there wasn't a chance for anything to happen on the kickoff."
"An onsides kick with them up by 35, I mean come on," Vroman said. "I'm not happy with that. There's no excuse for that."
On target: Baughman threw TD passes of 20 and 16 yards to McDonald.
Next week: Bishop Guilfoyle visits Penn Cambria. Philipsburg-Osceola visits Johnstown.
Records: Bishop Guilfoyle (9-0), Philipsburg-Osceola (3-6).
