BELLWOOD -- Bellwood-Antis' Holden Schreier plays point guard on the basketball team. At times Friday night, he looked like a point guard, running the Bellwood offense with a lot of confidence and getting the ball where it needed to be on time for his teammates to make plays.
Schreier completed one short pass after another that the backs and receivers took for much larger gains throughout the game, leading to a 28-0 homecoming win over Philipsburg-Osceola at John R. Hayes Field @ Memorial Stadium.
Player of the game: Schreier completed 10-of-18 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for 56 yards on six carries at pivotal moments to keep the chains moving. He also beat the defense to the corner of end zone for a successful 2-point conversion.
B-A coach Nick Lovrich: "We always talk about him being the general back there. He controlled the game. Made plays with his arm. Made plays with his legs. Real happy with his performance."
Plays of the game: Already leading 8-0, Bellwood struck for a 69-yard touchdown, doubling its lead to 16-0. Schreier completed a short stop pattern to Ethan Shawley, who sidestepped a defender, got around two more would be tacklers and raced down the Bellwood sideline for the long score.
Schreier: "It's pretty much the same thing (as playing point guard). You're out there to facilitate the offense, know where people will be, get them ball, and they finish the plays. When guys are out there making me look good, it helps build confidence."
Schreier capped a 13-play, 59-drive to start the third quarter with an 18-yard TD pass to Cayden Pellegrine. Schreier found him on a middle screen, and the senior back took it from there, rumbling through the PO defense for the score.
Pellegrine also had a 60-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to set the final score.
P-O coach Jeff Vroman: "I was happy with a lot of things we did, but the consistency factor is what ended up shooting us in the foot on both sides of the football. You gotta' work to achieve it. Several of their drives were extended on 3rd-and-long plays. Yards after catch hurt. We talk about all the time."
Vital statistic: The Mounties had the ball in Bellwood territory on five of its six possessions but failed to score. Turnover on downs thwarted three drives. The other two ended with a punt and an interception, respectively.
Lovrich: "They have some good athletes. Our kids made some key plays and really stepped up whenever they got on our side down to the red zone."
Unsung heroes: A Christian Jennings sack and forced fumble threw Philipsburg for a 19-yard loss on third down forcing the only punt of the game for either team. Curtis Shedlock ended the next Mounties drive with a 4th down pass breakup inside the Bellwood 10 to force a turnover on downs.
Notes: Gigi Juart was named this year's homecoming queen at halftime. Briley Campbell was the runner up.
