LOYSBURG -- Everett opened its 63rd meeting against Northern Bedford with a lightning bolt when Jonathan Cooper hit a deep pass to Dillen Bell for a 77-yard touchdown a minute into the game. After that, it was all Northern Bedford.
The Panthers put together five consecutive long, methodical scoring drives and shutout Everett the rest of way for a 32-6 win Friday at Panther Community Stadium.
"We got caught sleeping a little, but after that we settled down," Northern coach Garry Black said. "Outside of another long pass at the end of half and a fake punt, we played really good team defense. Kudos to all 11 of those guys. We did a lot of film work this week, went out and did our thing."
Players of the game: Northern mixed the run and pass well to churn out 20 first downs. Ben Clark ran for 109 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. He caught an 8-yard TD pass as well. Vaughn Schleinkofer completed 11-of-18 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Following the one to Clark in the first half, he had matching 13-yard strikes to Wesley Horsh and Aaron Bowers in the third quarter.
Schleinkofer: "We just took what they gave us. They were lining up with a whole bunch of people in coverage to stop the pass. They'd leave just five or six in the box so we just pounded the ball until they brought somebody else down into the box to stop the run. That's when we threw the ball."
Play of the game: Schleinkofer opened the second half with a 32-yard completion down the middle of the field to Bowers. It was Northern's only play of more than 20 yards. The Horsh touchdown capped the six-play drive, Northern's shortest of the game. The other scoring drives were all nine plays or more.
Black: "We put it on our line. If they were only going to play with five or six in the box, we needed to run the ball, and that's what we did. There were a lot of times Vaughn had to make decisions, and he made great decisions all night."
Deceiving stats: Northern outgained Everett by just 10 yards, 346-336, but 144 of the Warriors' yards came on just three plays.
Unsung heroes: Joey O'Brian and Caden Troy thwarted a potential scoring drive in the second half with back-to-back sacks.
Everett coach Brian Koontz: "They obviously have a better team than us. That's why they beat us."
Notable: Northern padded its edge in the all-time series to
39-23-1.
