PATTON -- Cambria Heights made quick and decisive work of Conemaugh Valley on Friday night as the undefeated Highlanders rolled to a 48-0 victory in a Heritage Conference game.
The Highlanders built a 41-0 halftime lead on the strength of four possessions that required only one play from scrimmage. Six different players scored touchdowns in the first half.
Cambria Heights awaits an early-season showdown with backyard rival Northern Cambria in a game that will match the conference's only remaining unbeaten teams.
Play of the game: Trey Trybus returned a Josef Toth punt 48 yards to the Conemaugh Valley 10-yard line. Five plays (including a recovered fumble) later, Jaxxon Kline bulled his way in from the 1 for the second score of the opening period.
Player of the game: Heights quarterback Isaac Weiland completed 4 of 8 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. He found Marshall Eckenrode for a 61-yard touchdown pass, and connected with Trybus for a touchdown pass that covered 55 yards.
Unsung hero: Cambria Heights freshman Nolan Clawson filled in at running back and provided 106 yards rushing and a 40-yard touchdown.
Most vital statistics: Cambria Heights held Conemaugh Valley to 14 total yards and did not allow a pass completion.
Heights coach Jarrod Lewis: "Any time you have a rivalry game, you're in for it. We're excited about it. Rivalry games are tough games. You can throw out the records.
More from Lewis: "We need to make sure we're taking care of the assignments, limit big plays (from the opposition), get big plays from the offense and make sure we're taking care of the football."
Conemaugh Valley coach Matthew Kent: "We're banged up and we're down to a kid who had never played quarterback before this week. And then he goes down. We're trying to stop the bleeding. We're low on numbers already. And we're trying to stop the bleeding with underclassmen. We're not in a good way right now."
Trybus: "Weiland has a good ball. He can read defenses really well. I don't hold the turnovers against him because he's a good quarterback at the end of the day."
Notable: Stephen Nelen opened the scoring with a 38-yard run. ... The Highlanders limited CV to minus-26 yards in the first half. ... Garrett Jasper's 5-yard touchdown run with 2:59 left in the second period caused the entire second half to be played on a running clock ... Heights did not punt. ... Kaiden Ivory took over at quarterback for the Highlanders in the third quarter and scored the only touchdown of the second half.
