MORRISDALE -- After a narrow loss to Northern Bedford last week, Claysburg-Kimmel was able to capture its first win in a rout of West Branch on Friday night at L.T. Drivas Memorial Field.
The Bulldogs didn't look like they were winless, riding the 1-2 running combination of quarterback Mason Campagna and tailback Mark Lattieri to 241 rushing yards in a 29-point first half and beating the Warriors, 49-12.
"Our kids were hungry to get this number one win," Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kassick. "West Branch is tough. They've got a lot of good skilled kids. Our kids sucked it and played pretty hard.
"Campagna and Lattieri are very patient runners and very rarely does the first guy tackle them."
The Warriors had no solution to slowing Campagna and Lattieri, both of whom are patient in looking for holes, quick and shifty.
Campagna ran for 183 yards on nine carries, scored three rushing touchdowns of 26, 48 and 44 and connected with Tyler Mowery for a 55-yard touchdown pass. Lattieri amassed 154 rushing yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns.
"I think Claysburg came with a great gameplan," West Branch coach Travis McDowell said. "They knew what to do against us. Coach (Chuck) Cassick coached his kids up. Campagna is an athlete. We had a gameplan to try to contain him, and we didn't do it. He ran the ball hard and we missed some tackles."
Play of the game: After stopping West Branch on fourth down, Campagna threw a screen pass to Tyler Mowry, who patiently followed his downfield blockers and raced 55 yards to the end zone to make the scored 22-6.
"It's one of our normal things," Kassick said. "We thought we had a chance at it, and if we got the right block in the right spot we'd be OK. Tyler Mowry caught it and made a great cutback. The linemen set up the block. It was pretty darn well done."
Player of the game: Campagna was nearly unstoppable running the ball and he completed 7 of 15 for 117 yards.
Unsung hero: The Claysburg offensive line opened gaping holes for Campagna and Lattieri and protected Campagna.
Most vital statistics: The Bulldogs outgained the Warriors, 476-137.
Notable: The Bulldogs held the Warriors to 0 rushing yards thanks to the minus-40 for quarterback Conner Danko. ... Mowry intercepted a pass. ... C-K's Trevor Brown scored on an 18-yard run. ... Play was briefly stopped for an injury to an official.
Next week: Claysburg-Kimmel visits Juniata Valley. Valley is coming off a loss at home to Glendale. West Branch visits Mount Union. Mount Union is coming off a victory at Curwensville.
Records: Claysburg-Kimmel (1-2), West Branch (0-3)
