CLAYSBURG -- Claysburg-Kimmel entered Friday's game against Curwensville looking for its third straight win, but it didn't go well early.
Claysburg fell into a big, early hole when the Golden Tide scored touchdowns on its first three possessions for an early 21-0 lead.
The Bulldogs didn't panic, however, scoring three straight touchdowns of their own.
One play after Claysburg tied it up, Curwensville struck for a 67-yard touchdown late in the first half, taking a 28-21 lead to the locker room.
The Bulldogs made some halftime adjustments, shut out Curwensville in the second half and rallied with back-to-back 11-play scoring drives for a 34-28 victory at Bulldog stadium.
Players of the game: Mason Campagna ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. He also completed 11-of-14 passes for 127 yards. Mark Lattieri ran for 89 yards on 19 carries and three scores, including two in the fourth quarter to tie the game then give Claysburg the lead for the first time.
Campagna: "We faced a lot of adversity at the start, but as we got further into the game and into our playbook, it all came together."
Plays of the game: After Lattieri got Claysburg on the board with a 1-yard run, Campagna caught the Tide defense off guard with a quick-hitter up the middle that went for a 71-yard touchdown. On the ensuing drive, Campagna raced through the middle of the defense again, cut right, spun out of tackle on his way to a 36-yard score.
In the second half, defensive end Remington Diehl made a pair of plays to get the ball back on back-to-back fourth quarter possessions, leading to the second-half touchdowns. On fourth-and-12 from the Claysburg 30, Diehl put heavy pressure on Curwensville quarterback Tyler Dunn, forcing an incomplete pass and a turnover on downs. On the Tides' next possession with the score tied 28-28, Diehl broke into the backfield and made a lunging interception of a lateral pitch.
Claysburg-Kimmel head coach Chuck Kassick: "He brings a lot of pressure off the edge. He's relentless. He brings energy every play. That's what he's all about."
Unsung heroes: Campagna and Lattieri gained nearly all their yards up the middle behind the interior of the offensive line. Center Landon Knisely, along with guards Trevor Ritchey and Deken Brown, dominated the point of attack.
Lattieri: "(The offensive line) played great. They've been in the gym getting bigger and stronger to be able to do that type of stuff. Can't say enough about them."
Vital statistics: Dunn completed 14-of-18 passes for 251 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. He had touchdown passes covering 57, 33, 23 and 67 yards.
Curwensville coach Jim Thompson: "We have a couple really athletic kids on the outside that we feel are going to win one-on-one matchups most of the time. We got some of those matchups early, and our kids made some plays."
Claysburg put more pressure on Dunn in the second half, holding the Tide's offense to just 79 yards and zero points. Diehl, Knisely and Collton Replogle all had second-half sacks.
Kassick: "We were bringing a little extra pressure. We balanced our pressure a little more, widened our guys out a little more and got in the gaps to confuse them a little bit."
