Bulldog rushing attack earns ‘W’

By Kevin Petrochko 3 min read

ALEXANDRIA -- Claysburg-Kimmel entered Friday night's game against Juniata Valley looking for its second win in 15 years against the Hornets.

The Bulldogs' ground game helped propel them to a victory over the Hornets, 20-14, on Friday night at A.R. Simkins Memorial Field.

"We talked about that, and the history over these last 15 years," Claysburg head coach Chuck Kassick said. "This is extremely important for us.

After a scoreless first half, junior quarterback Mason Campagna led the charge for the Bulldogs, racking up 69 rushing yards and all three touchdowns.

"It's just fun," said Campagna. "I love football and the line's open up holes and I just run hard."

Campagna also had a solid night in the passing game, completing 13 of 23 passes for 180 yards.

"He's a playmaker," Kassick said. "He put us on our shoulders and said, 'hey, guys were ok.'"

Ultimately, mistakes cost the Hornets the game

despite their effort.

"Mental mistakes and physical mistakes, both combined, that's clearly the difference," Juniata Valley head coach Bill Musser said. "We fumbled on the 1-yard-line again."

Play of the game: With 0:15 left in the fourth quarter, Mason Campagna racked up a 3-yard touchdown run to seal the game for the Bulldogs.

Player of the game: Campagna finished with

19 carries for 65 yards. He also completed 13-of-23 passes for 180 yards.

Unsung hero: C-K's Mark Lattieri racked up 12 carries for 32 yards.

Most vital statistic: Claysburg-Kimmel out-rushed Juniata Valley, 226-105.

Kassick: "Their line brought some heat," Kassick said. "We had a hard time with them up front; they did a great job getting off the ball.

Musser: "The physical effort, I can't question it,'' Musser said. "It's how are we going to match the mental effort with the physical effort."

Lattieri: "We all capitalized on some big plays,'' Lattieri said. "Just worked hard."

Notable:  Both teams had a combined total of 20 penalties for 195 yards. … With 4:59 left in the third quarter, Hornet tight end Levi Thompson scored on a 6-yard run to put Juniata Valley on the board. … In the fourth quarter, Hornet sophomore tight end Andrew Clark had a 3-yard touchdown run.
