FLINTON -- Two weeks into the season, two nailbiters for Glendale.
After pulling out a thriller against Windber last week, the Vikings followed it up with another against Meyersdale Friday on Military Appreciation Night.
Trailing 13-7 early in the fourth quarter, Glendale put together an 8-play, 72-yard drive to take the lead then got a late stop for a 14-13 victory.
Logan Skebeck dropped a dime into the outstretched arms of Rhylan Hoopsick-Bell in the corner of the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown, and Ryder Krise converted the extra point with 7:26 to give the Vikings their first lead of the game.
Glendale then held Meyersdale twice, first forcing a punt then a turnover on downs with 1:33 left.
Skebeck knocked away Lance Jones' pass on 4th-and-3 to preserve the one-point win.
Skebeck on the fourth-down play: "I saw the quarterback drop back. I see him looking at my guy. The quarterback looked he was ready to take off but then threw it at the last second, and I was able to get my hands on it."
Player of the game: Skebeck completed 13-of-27 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
Plays of the game: To go along with Skebeck's late touchdown pass and late pass breakup, Glendale converted on fourth down from the 9 in the second quarter when Skebeck lofted a pass towards the back corner of the end zone that Joey Kitko grabbed while falling backwards to make it a 7-7 game. Krise set up the score when he ripped the ball away from a Meyersdale receiver for an interception that gave Glendale the ball at the Red Raiders 24.
Skebeck: "It feels good to be 2-0. It's been a long time since Glendale's been 2-0. We're having fun, sticking together as a team. We've faced some adversity, but we're fighting through it."
Unsung heroes: With Meyersdale threatening to make it a two-score game early, Levi Hamilton recovered a fumble at the Glendale 2, putting a stop to the Red Raiders early momentum. Cameron Dreibelbis caught seven passes for 87 yards to keep the chains moving throughout the game. Hoopsick-Bell's only two receptions of the game came on the fourth quarter scoring drive. Prior to the touchdown, he took a slant pass
31 yards to convert a 3rd-and-10.
Vital statistics: After ripping off 71 yards on Meyersdale's first two drives, Spencer Whitfield ran for just 48 yards the rest of the game.
Meyersdale coach Ryan Donaldson: "We hit 'em early, and we expected that with our offense. We had momentum, but then it shifted with some early mistakes. At that point, we knew we were in for a dogfight."
Trexler: "We made a lot of errors, but the kids just stuck in there. They have that grit, that character. It was such an honor on Military Appreciation Night to see them battle to the end through all that adversity."
