SC too much for Mtn. Lions

STATE COLLEGE -- It's back to the drawing board for Altoona and head coach Vince Nedimyer Jr.

After dropping its season-opening game to archrival Hollidaysburg last week, Altoona ran into a buzz saw Friday night as the Mountain Lions were mercy-ruled, 57-0, by State College in a Mid-Penn Conference Commonwealth Division game at Memorial Field.

Senior quarterback Eddie Corkery played just the first half but threw six touchdown passes, including four to senior wideout Ty Salazer of 30, 47, 17 and 33 yards.

Corkery completed 10 of 15 passes for 238 yards. He also hit Mike Gaul with a 27-yard TD pass to open the scoring and found Cooper Brushwood with a 28-yard TD pass in the second quarter.

Altoona turned the ball over four times, three on fumbles.

"I really don't have anything to say," Nedimyer commented. "We'll go back, watch the game film and try to get better. It was the same thing (opening night). We can't turn the ball over. We have to get better at that.

"This stings, but give credit where credit is due. State College made the plays tonight. They have a lot of veterans and returning players last year, and we knew that coming into this game. It's only Week 2. We'll get back to practice Tuesday and keep working."

Plays of the game: In such a lopslided game, one play didn't make a difference. But Corkery's slant pass over the middle to Salazer that went for a 47-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter was a well-conceived route and gave State College a 28-0 lead.

Players of the game: Corkery's six touchdown passes, and Salazer's four TD receptions before the half.

Unsung heroes: State College's defense held Altoona to just 57 total yards.

Most vital statistics: State College piled up 382 total yards.

"I'm proud of these guys. I've got a lot of faith in these guys," said State College coach Matt Lintal. "They made some big-time plays. Our kids did a great job of executing on both sides of the ball."

Records: Altoona is 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Mid-Penn Conference Commonweath Division. State College is 2-0.

Next week: Altoona hosts Cumberland Valley, while State College travels to Harrisburg Saturday afternoon.
